The program is open to the public. The event will be held in the church’s barrier-free Education Building, which is located at 660 East Glen Avenue at Route 17. Free youth fencing demo offered at YMCA The Ridgewood YMCA is offering a free introductory class to its new fencing program for youth ages eight to 13 on Thursday, Jan. 28 at 4:30 p.m. Led by experienced instructors from the Gutkovskiy Fencing Academy, students will be taught proper form, technique and etiquette, and the basic skills of parry, thrust, and dodge. Following the introductory class, an eight-week session of fencing lessons will be held on Thursdays, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., Feb. 18 through April 8. Registration for the free class is required. Remington Good Citizenship Awards for area youths (age 21 and younger) are now available. These awards are given in recognition of significant service to: the community, a religious organization, a school, or a service organization. Applicants should display character, integrity, honesty, the ideals of American citizenship, and loyalty to their ideals by being an example of clean, upright living in speech and action. Awards will be announced and presented at the YMCA Volunteer Recognition Reception on Friday, March 5. American Red Cross classes for youth offered The Ridgewood Department of Parks and Recreation, an authorized American Red Cross provider, is offering certification courses to the children of the village. A Basic Aid Training Certification for eight- to 10-year-olds will be offered on Wednesday, Feb. 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. or on Thursday, April 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The class offers an introduction to the emergency action steps, and basic first aid procedures. Students become certified in how to prevent injuries and what to do in an emergency. Registration will be held in the Community Center Senior Lounge at Ridgewood Village Hall, 131 North Maple Avenue. The cost is $50. Participants should bring a bag lunch and beverage. The Red Cross Babysitter’s Training Certification course for 11- to 15-yearolds will be offered Feb. 18, March 13, or April 7. This class has an interactive educational format with activities such as identifying safety problems around the house and yard, and selecting ageappropriate toys and games for children. Participants will learn how to interview for a babysitting job, first aid techniques, diapering and feeding, and how to handle bedtime issues. Each class will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Community Center Senior Lounge at Ridgewood Village Hall, 131 North Maple Avenue. Registration for this six-hour course is $95. Students should bring a bag lunch and beverage. For more information, call (201) 670-5560. ‘Waltzing with Bashir’ will be shown at temple Temple Israel of Ridgewood is offering the award-winning film “Waltzing with Bashir” on Sunday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m. at the temple located at 475 Grove Street. “Waltzing with Bashir” is a 2008 Israeli animated documentary film which depicts writer and director Ari Folman’s search for his lost memories from his service in the Israel Defense Forces during the 1982 Lebanon War. Rabbi David J. Fine will lead a discussion following the screening. The screening/discussion is co-sponsored by Temple Israel’s Adult Education and Israel Action Committees, and a $5 per person donation is suggested to cover costs and refreshments. Forum for stroke survivors offered As part of its comprehensive contin- uum of care, The Valley Hospital Stroke Center offers a Stroke Support Group that provides a positive forum for stroke survivors and their caregivers dealing with life issues after a stroke. Members are able to share their challenges, triumphs, and other personal experiences. The group meets on the fourth Tuesday of every month in The Valley Hospital Board Room from 5:30 to 7 p.m. New members are welcome. Valley offers women’s health yoga The Valley Hospital Center for Women, Children and Family Education is offering women’s health yoga on Feb. 3, 10, 17, and 24 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Participants will practice the science and art of self-illumination through yoga.
