Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • January 13, 2010 Ridgewood Village council to ponder future of Schedler House by John Koster Ridgewood Deputy Mayor Keith Killion and resident Roger Wiegand worked out an amicable consensus on the possibility, if not the probability, of preserving and restoring the 190-year-old house that Ridgewood now owns as part of the Schedler property. The parcel, part of a bequest with Ridgewood designated as having the first option to purchase, was bought for $2.7 million, with $1 million from a Bergen County Open Space grant and the rest of the money bonded. The fact that the land was appraised at $2.6 million and that Ridgewood had paid $100,000 over the appraisal was questioned at the time by Boyd Loving, another resident who regularly attends council sessions. But council members had pointed out that the real value of the land was somewhat higher than the appraised price. Wiegand urged that the house not be razed until it has been evaluated as either a rental for municipal income or as some sort of municipally-owned structure, compatible with the sports fields now seen as the ultimate future of at least part of the 2.4-acre Schedler site, which Ridgewood bought late last year. “The roof is bad, but the rest of the house is fine,” Wiegand said. “I’ve been through the house, and it’s in pretty good shape.” Wiegand said the original house appeared to be about 190 years old, although alterations have been made over the years. He said the electrical system includes two sets of circuit breakers and that other issues were limited to water damage due to the roof and routine breakage. He cited the Lester Stable, which was preserved and moved with the financial assistance of Ridgewood philanthropist David Bolger, after the original Lester House was destroyed. The Stable is now used as the office for the Ridgewood Parks & Recreation Department and as an art gallery, meeting place, and summer children’s center. The resident suggested that something similar should be considered for the Schedler House. Deputy Mayor Killion, who had toured the abandoned house with Wiegand, was somewhat less impressed with the structure than Wiegand was, but concurred that more study was needed. Killion did not think the house would be a viable rental property because of liabilities and because (continued on page 16) Helpful Hints Helpful Hints from ome “On a cold day, from the outside of your house, feel for warm air escaping from areas around windows, doors and areas were cables and pipes enter.
