Ridgewood January 13, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 3 Hoops for Haley fundraiser coming to local church Bethlehem Lutheran Church is calling all students in grades three through 12 to join in a free-throw fundraiser on Jan. 18 to benefit Haley Tyrell, who was recently diagnosed with osteosarcoma. The event will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. in the church gymnasium at 155 Linwood Avenue, Ridgewood. This event is sponsored by Bethlehem Lutheran Church in cooperation with Upward Basketball and Goatgear Basketball. Participants are asked to use the Hoops for Haley sponsor form to request sponsor donations, which can be a per basket donation or a straight donation. Free throw shooters must attend the event on Jan. 18 between 2 and 6 p.m., make as many baskets as possible, and then collect their sponsor donations and mail them to the Hoops for Haley address on the sponsor form. Registration is required. Send an e-mail to merrickbb@yahoo.com with your child’s name, grade, school, phone number, estimated time of arrival, and Hoops for Haley in the subject line. Anyone who is unable to participate in this event, but would like to make a donation, is welcome to make a check payable to Haley Tyrrell and mail it to Hoops for Haley, c/o BELC, 155 Linwood Avenue, Ridgewood NJ, 07450, or visit Hope4Haley.org. Haley Tyrrell is the daughter of Lauren Chester from Ridgewood and Tim Tyrrell from Suffern, New York. Haley was a typical 10-year-old girl who loved to ride her bike, swim, play softball, and hang out with friends and her two younger sisters Megan and Sage. On Labor Day 2009, she slipped and broke her femur. Days later, Haley was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer. Since September, Haley has endured incredible physical and emotional pain from leg surgery, chemotherapy, constant illness, nausea, and complete hair loss. Unfortunately, this was just the beginning of her fight. In mid-December, Haley underwent surgery to have her right leg amputated. Hoops for Haley is being organized to help ease the ongoing financial burden the family is enduring. Although the Tyrrells have health insurance, many items such as a high tech prosthetic ($75K-$100K), and/or wheelchair, modified car, home alterations such as ramps and accessible home facilities, etc., will not be covered by insurance. Haley and the entire Tyrrell/Chester family appreciate the community’s prayers and support. Ridgewood Parks and Recreation, with sponsorship from the New Jersey Governor’s Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, will offer the following Middle School Mixers: eighth graders, Jan. 15; seventh graders, Jan. 22; and sixth graders, Feb. 5. Each evening offers dancing to music provided by DJ “Sound Illusions,” refreshments, Series of Middle School Mixers to begin this week fun, and games. All mixers are held from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Community Center is located in Ridgewood Village Hall, 131 North Maple Avenue. A $5 admission fee will be charged at the door.
