This program will be a food preparation and tasting presentation by Suzanne Dragan, nurse and director of Food for Life. The presentation will cover the new four food groups; health; and the environmental, humane, and economic benefits of eating a plant based diet while following sound nutritional guidelines. Visit uuridgewood.org for details. ‘Artangels’ exhibit at the Stable The Stable Art Gallery will present the mixed media offerings of five parish artists of Saint Gabriel’s Church in Saddle River during the month of January. Don Lawson is a water colorist whose paintings reflect his love of barns and farms, country scenes, fishing boats, villages, and old buildings. Bob Rizzotti’s paintings in oils and acrylics are inspired by his travels. Virginia Borghese specializes in portraiture, but also includes still lifes and landscapes in oils and pastels. Tom Parkes paints in watercolors, striving to capture the action of light on his subjects. John Grisoni’s works include portraits, landscapes, and still lifes in oil. Register for senior programs A new session of programs for seniors has begun at the Community Center in Ridgewood Village Hall, 131 North Maple Avenue. Fitness programs include the Silver Trodder’s Walking Club, Silver Strength and Motion, Volt Fitness for Men, Tai Chi Chai, Jazzercise and Zumba dance instruction. All provide a long list of benefits for better health. Relax with meditation, chair yoga, Dahn yoga, or a game of mahjong. Those interested in art may also enjoy Chinese brush painting and/or watercolors. Seminar to be presented Learning Services Home and School Association will host a seminar on accommodations and modifications available to students on Wednesday, Jan. 20 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in the Ridgewood Board of Education’s third floor conference room at 49 Cottage Place. Three district learning consultants, one from each school, and a fourth grade teacher from Ridgewood Special Services will lead the discussion. They will focus on how accommodations and modifications are determined; how they are documented and implemented; what the accommodations and modifications mean at every class level; and provisions available for standardized testing. Adult programming planned First Presbyterian Church, 722 East Ridgewood Avenue, will be offering adult education programs. These 30 to 45 minute informative speaking engagements will be held on Sundays after worship in the auditorium at 11:30 a.m. There will also be a coffee hour. Elizabeth Barca from Felician College will present a talk on “The Greatest Generation” on Feb. 21. On March 7 Frank Benedetto will offer a consumer affairs seminar on protecting oneself from scams. Open Houses planned West Side Nursery School, located at 6 South Monroe Street in Ridgewood, will open its doors to prospective parents for the 2010-11 school year on Thursday, Jan. 14 from 1 to 2 p.m. and on Friday, Feb. 12 from 10 to 11 a.m. Eighteen classes are offered at the school, ranging from special “Parent and Me” classes for two-and-a-half-yearolds to five-day preschool classes for four-year-olds. Both morning and afternoon programs are available. Afternoon sessions will end at 3:30 in order to accommodate the schedules of parents picking up older siblings in the public school system.
