Emmanuel asks...
Can You Help?
Happy New Year to you, our dear reader! And a BIG thank you for all of your support this past year. We look forward to our partnership with the community to help further the cause of supporting kids diagnosed with cancer and their families. Our hat’s off to all of our volunteer drivers for their extra effort delivering gifts and food as late as Christmas Eve! The folks at The Kentshire in Midland Park did a holiday collection that netted close to $500 for holiday meals and gifts for the families we serve. Many, many people stepped up to contribute this past December, and it was a very heartening demonstration of community support. If we have not returned your call or acknowledged your help this past holiday season, please call us again. Thank you! New Year -- new help 4-29-09 karen/janine needed: Amelia is now five years old. When she was almost two years old, she was diagEmmanuelHelp2x.75(4-29-09) nosed with a brain tumor. She had surgery in Philadelphia and received chemotherapy. At the time, her prognosis as 3 x .75 result of the surgery and chemo was cautiously optimistic. Sometimes, the surgery will not get all of the cancer and it will grow back. Within a year of the treatments, she began to have seizures and was diagnosed with epilepsy. She was transferred to a hospital for tests and care. The seizures occurred on and off for awhile. This past year, the seizures started happening again, and she received two surgeries in New York at Beth Israel Hospital. She now goes for physical therapy, vision therapy, and medical care. The seizures are gone due to some new revolutionary surgery. Amelia’s mom suffers from depression and really cannot provide care for the family. Amelia’s dad, Charles, lost his job because he has had to take over the parental duties. A variety of community groups have helped this
family when medical care was not available. The family could use a variety of things, which we list here for your consideration: size 6 tops and pants for Amelia, a department store gift card so 15-year-old sister Samantha can buy a sweater and jeans, a gas dryer, microwave, dishes, pots and pans, and a cable and DVD ready television for some entertainment. We also need paper products, including tissues and paper towels. Office volunteers are needed at the following times:
Monday, 1 to 5; Wednesday, 1 to 5; Thursday, 2:30 to 5; Friday, 10 to 1 and 1 to 5; and Saturday, 10 to 1. Call us at (201) 612-8118 before you stop by. Please do not leave items at the center without checking with us first. Our storage space is limited. Our current hours are Monday, 10 to 1; Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, 10 to 5; and Thursday, 10 to 2. The Northern Regional Center is located at 174 Paterson Avenue, Midland Park, NJ 07432. Visit us at: www.emmanuelcancer.org. As always, thank you for helping the children and their families!
Martin Luther King observance set
The 28th annual Ridgewood/Glen Rock observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be held on Monday, Jan. 18 at the Ridgewood United Methodist Church, 100 Dayton Street, Ridgewood. This year’s celebration, “Peace, Love, Unity,” will reflect on the many challenges our country is facing as we enter the new decade. The celebration, sponsored by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Committee of Ridgewood/Glen Rock, will begin at 10 a.m. with an interfaith service, followed by a rally in Van Neste Square at 11 a.m. and a community luncheon. Reverend Dr. Victor Peterson, pastor of the Ridgewood United Methodist Church, will preside over the interfaith service and speak to the “Peace, Love, Unity” theme. Rev. Peterson received his BA from Hofstra University New School in 1973 and was a restaurant manager and chef in Colorado for 10 years before returning east to attend Drew University. He graduated magna cum laude in 1988 with a master of divinity degree and has served in the communities of Summit, Hawthorne, Dingman’s Ferry, and Montclair. He earned his doctor of ministry to marriage and family and is a certified marriage and family therapist in addition to his pastoral duties. The afternoon fellowship program will be held at 1 p.m. and will feature Broadway actor Craig Alan Edwards in “King Alive!” -- a theatrical experience celebrating the passion and spirit of Dr. King through song and excerpts from some of his signature speeches. The afternoon program will include readings by Ridgewood and Glen Rock high school students, followed by Edwards’ performance. A native of Philadelphia and graduate of Boston University, Edwards is a New Yorkbased actor, writer, and producer. He has appeared in numerous regional and New York theater productions, and television shows such as “Fringe,” “Law & Order,” and “All My Children,” and films including “Sweet & Lowdown” and “The Opposite Sex.” He is also playwright and performer of “The Man in Room 306,” a fictional account of Dr. King’s last night in Memphis in 1968, which has been performed at Playhouse on the Square, Adirondack Theater Festival, Watermark Theater, Majestic Theater, Luna Stage Company, and university theatres across the country. Edwards will be accompanied by the Anointed Sons of Bethel men’s chorus. The annual Ridgewood/Glen Rock Martin Luther King Jr. celebration began in 1983 in an effort to unite area residents, regardless of faith or ethnic background, in worship and action as they work towards peace and justice for all. More than 20 religious groups, the Ridgewood and Glen Rock boards of education, local government, and civic organizations participate in and support the event each year. Financial support is provided by many organizations, individuals, agencies, and area businesses.
