February 24, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 5 Ridgewood Center presents workshop on language development Paramus-based Turrell Child Care & Early Learning Center, a division of Children’s Aid and Family Services, is presenting “From Babbling to Conversation: Language and Literacy Learning” on Saturday, March 6 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 200 Robin Road, Paramus. The workshop is geared toward early childhood education professionals and parents of infants through preschoolers. “Many people believe that children learn to read and write in kindergarten,” said Sandy Richards, director of child care services for the Turrell Center. “However, developing literacy skills begins much earlier through simple, everyday interactions: reading books, telling stories, singing songs, and talking to one another. Research shows that greater attention to early language development by parents and educators encourages the development of later literacy and communication skills.” The workshops include “Let’s Talk,” which focuses on ways to encourage language development in infants and toddlers; “From Do-Re-Mi to ABC,” which details how to teach literacy through music and “Strategies to Promote Literacy and Language Development at Home.” Presenters include Cindy Gennarelli, M. Ed. adjunct professor, director, Child Development Center at William Paterson University; Phyllis Jones, M.A. of the Bergen County Office for Children; and Elizabeth Lombardo, B.A., music education, of the Turrell Center. The cost of the workshop is $40 and includes breakfast and lunch. For more information, contact Liesl Fernandes at (201) 261-5970. The Turrell Center is fully licensed and accredited.
