Bill would expand emergency management authority
Legislation sponsored by New Jersey Senate Assistant Majority Leader John A. Girgenti to expand municipal emergency management authority in requesting assistance outside their territorial jurisdiction, was unanimously approved by the Senate Law & Public Safety Committee. “This measure is another step towards strengthening the protection of New Jersey citizens,” said Senator Girgenti, DBergen and Passaic. “Emergencies require rapid response; and the closest and most capable departments should be permitted to act immediately.” The bill, S-501, would expand the authority of emergency management departments in requesting assistance outside a municipality’s territorial jurisdiction. Under the provisions of the bill, first responders would not be confined to their specific territorial jurisdictions when they assist another municipality and other emergency workers. The bill will also increase the statutory protection of emergency management personnel tantamount to the members of the requesting municipal police force and fire department. “Current law already allows neighboring municipalities to create mutual aid plans between themselves in the event of an emergency,” said Senator Girgenti. “This measure would expand these plans statewide. The more flexible we are during emergencies, the greater our chances of successfully getting through a crisis. The focus needs to be on assistance.” The measure now heads to the full Senate for consideration.
