Borough opts out of study to contest water rates
by John Koster The Glen Rock Borough Council has decided not to pursue a Wyckoff initiative for a forensic study of the reasons for the Ridgewood Water Company’s 21 percent water rate increase. The borough’s rationale is that the $7,500 to help fund the study might be better spent on local residents’ immediate needs. Glen Rock Mayor John van Keuren fielded the question and tapped the individual members of the council for their thoughts at last week’s work session. The council members reached the consensus that they would rather spend the $7,500 proposed to fund the forensic study to address fiscal problems at home, rather than to tackle the Ridgewood Water Company’s decision. Ridgewood, Glen Rock, Midland Park, and Wyckoff residents who are served by the water company will all start paying for the 21 percent rate increase this year. The Ridgewood Village Council members voted on the increase late last year at a public meeting. Mayor van Keuren said, however, that he personally would approach Ridgewood Mayor David Pfund and other elected officials to forestall any additional water rate increases in the near future. “They’re all honorable people,” van Keuren said of the Ridgewood Council members. The mayor said he hoped that a personal -- rather than a confrontational -- approach would stabilize water rate increases for the near future. Glen Rock Council members did not disagree with van Keuren’s approbation of the Ridgewood Council, but some Glen Rock Council members said they would have happily subsidized the forensic study if money had not been so tight in Glen Rock’s own budget. “I just always felt that they were playing games and I would love to be able to do it if the budget wasn’t so tight,” Councilwoman Joan Orseck said. She said she remembered that a few years ago the Ridgewood Water Company had once raised rates because, ironically, Glen Rock was not using enough water. “I don’t want the ripples to get too high in this case,” van Keuren said. “I hope we can achieve what we want in this case, which is to address our concerns (about future increases). The council also introduced an ordinance to accept outside funds for the study of a possible artificial turf field on part of Lower Doremus Park. That installation would be contingent upon an acceptable environmental study and the ability of the various recreational sports groups to fund the entire estimated $1.5 million for the turf, grading, and installation. The ordinance is slated for a public hearing and potential adoption on Feb. 18. The document states that the following donations are anticipated: $6,000 from the Glen Rock Baseball Association, $6,000 from the Glen Rock Recreational Soccer Club, $6,000 from the Shooting Stars Soccer Club, $6,000 from the Glen Rock Junior Football Association, $4,000 from the Glen Rock Lacrosse Association, and $1,000 from Glen Rock Men’s Softball. These donations would fund the topographical surveying, geotechnical work, and Phase I of the environmental permitting process at Lower Faber Field on Doremus Avenue in Glen Rock.
