Neighbors continue to oppose Linwood bike path
by John Koster The Ridgewood Village Council heard from a resident who lives near the brook and opposes the Bergen County Department of Parks’ extension of the bike path to the side of the brook behind local homes – mostly on private property. Linda Reik, a resident who spoke at last week’s work session, said that Bergen
The Ridgewood Education Foundation is seeking former trustees to join in the organization’s 20th anniversary celebration on Wednesday, March 24. The event will be held from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Ridgewood Country Club. The event will feature a cocktail buffet, appetizers, carving stations, and dessert and coffee.
Foundation seeks former trustees
Since 1989, the foundation has awarded more than $400,000 in grants for special projects created by forward thinking teachers, parents, students, and alumni. Anyone interested in the foundation’s anniversary event can contact Rebecca Silbernagel, REF Executive Director, at rsilbernagel@ridgewood.k12.nj.us.
County activities – opposed by most neighbors in 2006 when plans were first discussed – appeared to be resuming. She asked the Ridgewood Council to register its opposition on behalf of village residents. “We have recently seen surveying going on, and test borings 50 feet into the earth,” Reik said last week at the council work session. “What is the Bergen County Department of Parks doing?” Reik said she hoped the surveys and test borings did not represent another attempt to extend the bike path behind the neighborhood homes and adjacent to the brook.
“It is still a 600-foot path to nowhere,” Reik said of the possible extension of the bike path. She said that residents of Upper Saddle River had also voiced their opposition to the extension of the path. Objectors have long argued that the area between their back yards and the brook is difficult to police and protect. They also said that having strollers and cyclists from outside Ridgewood use the path for hiking and biking would interfere with the privacy of homeowners and would place an additional burden on police and other safety personnel.
