School Vacation Camp offered The Ridgewood YMCA February School Vacation Camp, which will be held Feb. 15 through 19, provides a fun and affordable day care alternative for the February school break. The camp is open to all area children in kindergarten through grade five, and Y membership is not required. Registration is on a daily basis, and each day includes swimming, games, and CATCH Kids Club, a physical activity education program. The daily themes are: Monday, Super Science; Tuesday, Kids in the Kitchen; Wednesday, Awesome Art Day; Thursday, Camp Olympics; and Friday, PG Movie. New for February break week is a Teen Vacation Day Camp for ages 11 through 15. Each day features a trip to local attractions: Monday, mini golf and bowling; Tuesday, Liberty Science Center and IMAX movie; and Wednesday, Space Odyssey USA and a movie. Free Family Night announced The Ridgewood YMCA is hosting a special free Family Night for future day campers and their parents on Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. The evening of pizza, ice cream, swimming, and activities will be held at the Y’s 112 Oak Street facility. The only requirement to attend is to contact the YMCA by Feb. 12 to make reservations for this fun-filled family event. OPRC announces Lenten Events Ridgewood’s Old Paramus Reformed Church will offer a series Lenten events beginning with Ash Wednesday services on Feb. 17 at 11:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m., with OPRC Pastor Rev. Tom Marsden officiating and distributing ashes. A Lenten Discussion Series, moderated by OPRC Health Ministry Director Carol O’Neill, will begin Feb. 23. O’Neill will present thought-provoking DVDs and explore
their meaning on each Tuesday through March 30 at 10:30 a.m. or 7:30 p.m. The ongoing DVD Bible Study Series on the Old Testament will be suspended for Lent and will resume after Easter. On March 7, from 4 to 7 p.m., an opportunity for an in-depth spiritual experience will be available in the Education Building. A labyrinth will be set up for participants to walk its length in a thoughtful state of meditation and peace, emulating an ancient and transformative tool used in European cathedrals as a substitute for pilgrimages when travel to Jerusalem was too dangerous. YMCA hosts Valentine’s Social Singles and couples are invited to an evening of dancing at the Ridgewood YMCA on Saturday, Feb. 13 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. The social will begin with a free ballroom lesson hosted by renowned Dance Master Lestat, followed by a dance and refreshments. Signup before Feb. 13 and receive a Valentine’s Day 20 percent discount coupon for dinner at a local Ridgewood restaurant on Feb.13 only. New member classes forming The Rev. Dr. Gareth Icenogle, senior pastor and head of staff at West Side Presbyterian Church, will lead a series of new member classes. Anyone who would like to learn more about what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ and a member of West Side is encouraged to attend. Participation in a class is not a commitment to join the church. The Saturday classes will run from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Feb. 27, March 20, April 24, and May 22. Light refreshments will be provided, and child care is available upon request. Attendance at one class is all that is requested prior to becoming a member. Nursery school holds Open House West Side Nursery School, located at 6 South Monroe Street in Ridgewood, will hold an Open House for parents of prospective students for 2010-11. The event has been set for Feb.12 from 10 to 11 a.m. Eighteen classes are offered at the school, ranging from special “Parent and Me” classes for two-and-a-half-
year-olds to five-day preschool classes for four-year-olds. Morning and afternoon programs are available. Afternoon sessions will end at 3:30 in order to accommodate the schedules of parents picking up older siblings in the public school system. Kindergarten enrichment classes are available in the morning or afternoon. West Side Nursery School has large, well-equipped classrooms that are the scene of developmentally appropriate activities that encourage individual creativity, learning, and socialization. Daily playtime on the half-acre playground, and weekly music and physical education sessions are also part of the curriculum. Ash Wednesday Dinner planned Our Lady of Mount Carmel MOMs will host an Ash Wednesday Prayer Service and Meatless Dinner on Feb. 17 at 5:30 p.m. Join the MOMs parish family in receiving ashes at a prayer service for children and families in the church, followed by a simple meal in the parish center. Wright to discuss Hudson’s visit On Feb. 24, Kevin Wright, past president of the Bergen County Historical Society, will discuss and sign his book, “1609: A Country That Was Never Lost - The 400th Anniversary of Henry Hudson’s Visit with North Americans of the Middle Atlantic Coast.” This joint program of The Hermitage and the Ridgewood Public Library will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Ridgewood Public Library Auditorium, 125 North Maple Avenue, Ridgewood. Wright’s book takes readers back in time for a visit with the Algonquian and Iroquoian communities, including the Manhattans, the Minisinks of Bachom’s Country, the Lenape of the Schuylkill estuary, the Mahicans, Susquehannocks, Mohawks, and others whose names have been lost in the mists of time. The book also covers the birth of the Dutch colony of New Netherland on the Hudson and Delaware rivers and the dawn of history for Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, and Connecticut.
