Byrd School Home and School Association will host its first Casino Night on Saturday, March 6 from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m., in Community Hall at Saint Catharine’s Church, Glen Rock. This major fundraiser is open to families and friends. Proceeds will benefit the Byrd School HAS, which funds student programs such as informative assemblies, author visits, field trips, clubs, technology, and more. These activities help to enhance the quality of education at Byrd School. Tickets are $50 each and include play money to start the night and unlimited food and beverages. There will be 10 casino tables featuring a variety of games. The evening will also feature a DJ, prize baskets, a cash prize contest, and auction items. The committee is still seeking monetary donations and donations of goods and services. There are also opportunities to sponsor one of the casino tables, which will include space to advertise a business and ad space on the Byrd HSA website for the remainder of the school year. Barbara Steinberg, certified financial planner, registered financial gerontologist, and specialist in elder care financial planning, will lead the seminar. Steinberg will cover sources of funding from government, private programs, and a discussion on the pension benefit available from the Veterans Administration. The meeting will be held at the Community Church in Glen Rock at 1:30 p.m. The meeting will be preceded by a coffee social at 1 p.m. Retired and semi-retired men interested in attending the meeting or joining the Activities Club are invited to contact Rick Colton at (201) 445-0755. Shir Appeal for perform Shir Appeal, a Jewish a cappella group from Tufts Uni- versity, will perform at the Glen Rock Jewish Center on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 3 and again at 8 p.m. The 3 p.m. concert is targeted for youngsters ages three to six. Snacks will be provided for everyone after the show. Admission is free to all children and for GRJC Nursery and Religious School families. All other adults are welcome at $10 a person. All tickets must be reserved in advance. The 8 p.m. concert is for teens and adults. A dessert reception will follow. Admission is free to the GRJC community (members, Nursery/Religious School parents, Men’s Club). This concert is open to the public. Tickets, at $10 a person, are available in advance. Relief efforts for Haiti underway The Glen Rock Jewish Center urges the community to continue supporting the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. Contributors are welcome to use the GRJC as a conduit for donations to Haiti. The local contact is Beth Fernandez, who is collecting on behalf of Partners in Health. Another option is the local Jewish Federation, UJA of Northern New Jersey, which has set up a Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund. For more information, visit www.ujannj.org. The GRJC has offered to collect the donations and send them on behalf of the GRJC community with words and prayers for the victims. Annual Fish and Chips Dinner set The Annual Fish & Chips Dinner, a long-time Lenten tradition at All Saints’ Episcopal Church, 40 Central Avenue, Glen Rock, will be held Saturday, Feb. 27 in the Parish Hall at 6 p.m. This event is open to the public. Dinner will be catered by Tastefully British and will include fish, french fries, coleslaw, beverages, and dessert. A chicken dinner alternative will be offered and must be reserved at the time of ticket purchase. Tickets are $16 for adults, and $35 for families with children age 12 and under. Dinners can also be ordered for takeout when tickets are purchased. Tickets must be purchased in advance. No tickets will be sold at the door. Wallace to present ‘Lovely Lilacs’ Dr. Edith Wallace will present “Lovely Lilacs: From Skylands to Your Garden” to the Glen Rock Garden Club on Tuesday, Feb. 15. The meeting will begin at 7:45 p.m. in the Glen Rock Municipal Annex on Maple Avenue. Wallace, a former William Paterson University professor, is the coordinator of the Lilac Garden Restoration Project at the New Jersey Botanical Garden. The public is invited to attend this meeting. Admission is free, and refreshments will be served. Seniors announce spring trips The Glen Rock Seniors have planned two trips for spring. The group will celebrate the Feast of Saint Joseph at the Brownstone in Paterson on March 24. Entertainment will be provided by the Ace in the Hole and an Italian lunch will be served. The cost for this event is $46 for members and $49 for non-members. The bus will depart from Wilde Park at 10:30 a.m. For more information, contact Eleanor at (201) 445-9330. On April 28, there will be a trip to Hunterdon Hills Playhouse to see “The Sunshine Boys.” Lunch and bus transportation is included. The cost is $54 for members and $59 for non-members.
