Sewage treatment plant accepts first sludge delivery
by John Koster The Ridgewood-owned sewage treatment plant located within the borders of Glen Rock recently accepted its first delivery of 500 gallons of sludge as the opening of an operation to use slack hours at the plant to raise money for Ridgewood. The concept to turn down time at the plant into dollars for tax relief was designed by Ridgewood Village Engineer Christopher Rutishauser and was approved by the Ridgewood Village Council after Rutishauser assured the council that accepting tank trucks loaded with liquid sludge could be carried out without any odor or contamination problems. The concept became controversial in Glen Rock when residents learned about the approval through a story in Ridgewood TIMES/Villadom TIMES. Several residents protested to the Glen Rock Borough Council, objecting in principal to the idea that Ridgewood was making from a site located within the borders of Glen Rock, though Ridgewood is the property owner. Glen Rock Council members explained that Ridgewood has a legal right to utilize the plant as its sees fit, since Ridgewood is the landowner. Council members in Glen Rock added, however, that they would have preferred it if Ridgewood officials had kept them better informed before approving the processing of out-of-town sludge within Glen Rock, even if the operation is being carried out on Ridgewood-owned land. In other business related to generating income, the Ridgewood Council introduced an ordinance to allow Michael and Jennifer Hallowell to purchase the landlocked lot adjacent to their house on a bid of $25,050.
The lot cannot be used for free-standing construction, but allowing the neighboring family to buy the property puts it back on the tax rolls, bringing in revenue for Ridgewood.
The Ridgewood Board of Education has accepted a number of donations from the local Home and School Associations and other benefactors for the technical enhancement of the public schools. The George Washington Middle School Home & School Association donated $12,000 to purchase 11 desktop computers for the school. MPN Software Systems made an in-kind donation in concert with Ridgewood High School teacher Karen Walters of industrial video broadcast equipment with an approximate value of $5,000 to be used for the Ridgewood High School TV Club. The Ridgewood High School TV Club donated labels, extension cords, new plugs, testers,

and a cart for a total value of $119. Pam Woods donated a framed picture of Mrs. Margaret Somerville for the Somerville with an approximate value $3,000. The NPC Association donated a table saw and blade with a value of $429 and a sewing machine with a value of $168. These gifts will be used for the New Players Company Theatre Program. Tom Thurston of Game Ready donated left and right shoulder sleeves with a value of $584 to be used by Ridgewood High School’s Game Ready Unit. J. KOSTER
