Professional study urged for Schedler House
by John Koster Saving the venerable Schedler House located on Ridgewood’s newly acquired parcel of open space might be a good idea, according to Ridgewood philanthropist David Bolger, but he said forming a committee would not be as useful as a professional study by an architect. “The village, if interested in pursuing restoring the Schedler House, should consider hiring a historical architect to head this project,” Bolger said last week. “When the cost of the entire renovation project has been thoroughly investigated, then the village can proceed with possibly considering this project.” Bolger, whose most recent project for Ridgewood was the reconstruction of the Pease Library, also funded the relocation and restoration of the Lester Stable many years ago. The concept of saving the Schedler House was first broached by Roger Wiegand, a resident who often speaks at council meetings. His idea was then seconded by the League of Women Voters. Proponents said the house, which dates from the 1780s, should be examined closely before it is razed. The building, they said, might be restored at a reasonable cost and used for office space by the village. Ridgewood Deputy Mayor Keith Killion, who recently toured the house with Wiegand, agreed with Wiegand that the roof was in bad shape. Wiegand said that the rest of the house appeared to be sturdy except for minor water damage, but Killion said the damage might be more substantial than Wiegand thought. Killion supported a thorough investigation of the Schedler House before any demolition, but was opposed to leasing it to residential tenants, as the two houses on the Habernickel Horse Farm property are now leased. The liabilities of leasing the house, Killion said, outweighed any possible financial benefits. Bolger has taken no stand on restoration versus demolition, but he was opposed to the formation of committees or study groups. He said that restoration of the Lester Stable, the Pease Library, and the School House Museum had each been worked
out between Bolger himself and a single responsible official: Mayor Ed Butler for the Lester Stable, Ridgewood Village Manager James Ten Hoeve for the Pease Library, and Debbie Kovach for the School House Museum. Committees existed, Bolger said, but the one-on-one contact with a single responsible official had enabled the projects to be completed.
The Ridgewood Education Foundation is seeking former trustees to join in the organization’s 20th anniversary celebration on Wednesday, March 24. The event will be held from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Ridgewood Country Club. The event will feature a cocktail buffet, appetizers, carving stations, and dessert and coffee.
