February 3, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 11 Glen Rock The first official book signing of John Koster’s “Custer Survivor: The End of a Myth, The Beginning of a Legend,” featured a brief talk about the reality of the battle of the Little Bighorn that made it possible for Sergeant Frank Finkel to escape from Custer’s Last Stand. Wyckoff Township Committeeman David Connolly, Township Administrator Robert Shannon, and Police Chief Benjamin Fox stopped in to listen, ask questions, and purchase copies of the profusely illustrated book from Don Bracken of History Publications. Glen Rock Librarian Roz Pelcyger introduced the lecture, quoting reviews from Publisher’s Weekly, which called the book “a carefully deconstructed historical mystery sure to thrill American history enthusiasts…Koster’s pursuit of the truth behind a great American myth makes for a compelling tale in itself.” Book signing attracts local history buffs Pelcyger also quoted Library Journal, which touted the book as “highly recommended.” The book has also received favorable reviews from “Wild West” magazine and from the Bismarck Tribune, which broke the story of the “Custer Massacre” in 1876. Former Wyckoff Police Chief John Ydo and former Ridgewood Chief of Detectives Keith Killion were among the experts who examined samples of handwriting from “August Finckle’s” Army enlistment in 1872 and “Frank Finkel’s” 1921 sign-off on his first wife’s probate, and confirmed that the signatures were from the same person. Dr. Thomas P. Lowry, a psychiatrist and author of 20 books on medicine, the Civil War, and the frontier, also confirmed the handwriting. (Finkel’s foster grandson, Mike Watson, confirmed after the book went to press that Finkel told his oldest son Ben that he had enlisted under the name “August Finckle.”) “Custer Survivor” is available at Barnes & Noble, through Amazon.com, and through the publisher. The book has been stocked at the Little Bighorn Memorial Museum in Montana, where historian John Doener called it “a great book” and said “the handwriting is the clincher.” YWCA (continued from page 4) Owners.
