December 22, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 27 Glen Rock Roundup Group to discuss ‘The Book of Dave’ The Glen Rock Library’s Tea at Two on Tuesday Book Discussion Group will cover “The Book of Dave” by Will Self on Tuesday, Dec. 21 at 2 p.m. The novel is a searing satire of London cabbie Dave Rudman’s life. Dave’s wife of five years deserts him for another man, taking their only child with her. He is thrown into a tailspin of doubt and discontent. Driven mad by divorce and ill-prescribed antidepressants, Dave thinks he is God and writes a vitriolic screed, which he has printed on metal plates and buries in a garden. The gripping text is part memoir, part deranged philosophical treatise, and part handbook of “the knowledge” learned by all London cab drivers. Sometime in the 26th century, England has entered a second Dark Age. “The Book of Dave” is discovered by the inhabitants on the island of Ham, where it becomes a sacred text, and its author is revered as a mighty prophet. Tea at Two is an informal, casually run group open to area residents on the third Tuesday of every month. Copies of the book are available at the library’s reference desk. The library is located at 315 Rock Road. For more information, call (201) 670-3970.
