Ridgewood December 15, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 9 Village may change taxi coverage The Ridgewood Council has introduced an ordinance to establish new insurance coverage maximums. The new ordinance would set Ridgewood’s stipulated insurance requirements at not less than $100,000 per person, $300,000 per occurrence, and $50,000 for property damage. This requirement of maximum insurance payment is considerably higher than that of most neighboring towns, but lower than that now charged by condition of the Ridgewood franchise. The adoption hearing has been scheduled for Jan. 12, 2011. Ridgewood Taxi attorney David Rutherford had argued at a previous council meeting that the present maximum coverage of $1 million was so high that insurance costs could drive the 100-year-old company out of business. The $1 million figure, Rutherford said, might be appropriate for long-haul, multi-passenger limousine services, but was not appropriate for Ridgewood Taxi, which typically provides transportation to stores for seniors who don’t own cars, and rides to and from the local railroad station for out-of-town guests. A draft of a request for proposal for an alternate cab service has been submitted to the Ridgewood Village Council for approval, but no substantive action was reported at press time. Ridgewood Taxi offers discount books, both through Ridgewood and Glen Rock, for senior citizens and disabled individuals who rely on cab service and are financially circumscribed. J.
