OPRC sets Christmas services Ridgewood’s Old Paramus Reformed Church will celebrate the Christmas season with special services. At 10 a.m. on Dec. 19, the service will feature the 21voice Chancel Choir and guests singing George Frederic Handel’s “Messiah.” The choir will be conducted by organist and Director of Music Stewart Holmes. On Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, Pastor Rev. Tom Marsden will preside at a 5:30 p.m. Family Service and the 11 p.m. traditional Candlelight Service of lessons and carols. He will follow the format of Kings College Choir in England. The 11 p.m. service will also feature instrumentalists and the Chancel Choir. On Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, the 6 p.m. service for families will carry a special message for children of all ages, music by the multi-generational instrumental Christmas Consort Orchestra, children’s choirs, and the singing of traditional Christmas carols. The 11 p.m. Christmas Eve Candlelight and Service of Holy Communion will include the traditional candle-lighting ceremony and singing of “Silent Night.” The senior choir will present a special program of music and Pastor Spencer will preach the life-giving message of Jesus’ birth. The Christmas Day Festival service of Holy Communion will be Saturday, Dec. 25 at 10:30 a.m. Good Shepherd is located at the corner of Rock Road and Ackerman Avenue in Glen Rock. Christmas Eve services offered Ridgewood United Methodist Church, 100 Dayton Street in Ridgewood, has planned three services for Christmas Eve, Dec. 24. There will be a 4 p.m. Children’s Service, a 10:30 p.m. program of Christmas music, and an 11 p.m. Candlelight Service. For more info call (201) 652-2868. Holiday Services planned The Membership Committee of the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood, 113 Cottage Place, welcomes all to attend the special holiday services. On Dec. 19 at 10:30 a.m., there will be an “Intergenerational Christmas Pageant.” The 7 p.m. service on Dec. 24, “Christmas Eve Lessons and Carols,” will be filled with music, readings, and reflections. The traditional “Fireside Service” will take place Dec. 26 at 10 a.m. Members and friends are welcome to share stories, poems, music, and more.
A New Year’s service is planned for Jan. 2 at 10 a.m. This service, “Coffin and Cradle,” is both serious and hopeful. Attendees may bring an object to put in the coffin symbolizing something they want buried and an object to place in the cradle symbolizing something they hope to give birth to in the New Year. The Sunday school of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church will present its annual Christmas Pageant on Sunday, Dec. 19 in the sanctuary during the 10:30 a.m. worship service. The community is invited. Led by the children of the congregation’s 80-member Sunday school, this original pageant, written by Pastor Roger Spencer, will tell the story of the birth of Christ in words, songs, and actions. Afterwards, the congregation will gather in Fellowship Hall for an International Coffee Hour. For a fifth year, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church will conduct a “Blue Christmas” worship service on Sunday, Dec. 19 at 3 p.m. Designed for people who have suffered loss of a loved one, a job, or a relationship, the service offers opportunity for contemplation about Christmas.
