Mancuso

(continued from page 5) whether to renovate Graydon Pool into a series of swimming pools or to maintain the pool’s lake-like appearance with improved water quality. Some of Mancuso’s most trying moments came during exchanges with Councilman Thomas Vaughn Fitzgerald, whose heated exchanges with Mancuso began when Fitzgerald, a Marine Corps veteran of World War II and Korea, was a private citizen who attended council sessions. Some council meetings in those days lasted until 1 a.m. and some council members said it was impossible to get people who weren’t retired for council because employed people couldn’t take the late hours and go to work the next day. Fitzgerald, a constant critic of municipal spending and over-staffing, was elected to the council and continued to confront Mancuso from the bench. Mancuso’s fans remember him for the huge amount of time he put in as a council member, his willingness to listen to both sides of a controversy, and his genuine affection for the people of Ridgewood. He is now a resident of Jackson, but frequently stops off in Ridgewood to keep in touch with friends.
