Mayor issues challenge: Fix the parking situation
by John Koster Mayor Keith Killion has issued a challenge to the Ridgewood Council and the village’s administration: Fix Ridgewood’s shopper parking problems as soon as possible. “We’ve been talking about this since I’ve been a council member,” Mayor Killion said. “I challenge the council and administration that we act on it as fast as possible.” Killion and the council had just heard from Scott Lief of the Ridgewood Chamber of Commerce, backed by Chamber members Ed Sullivan and Tom Hillman at the microphone and several other members in the audience. The Chamber members submitted a list of recommendations that Councilman Paul Aronsohn termed a “win-win-win” proposal. Killion, however, took umbrage with one of the four proposals; specifically that parking enforcement personnel slack off on issuing tickets to reduce the perception that they are being “hunted and stalked,” as Lief put it, by the parking officers. “I really do have a problem with that. That goes against my grain,” said Killion, a 30-year veteran of the Ridgewood Police Department, who was chief of detectives when he retired two years ago after being elected to the council. “Enforcement is enforcement. If no one is breaking the law, there is no problem. No one is happy about getting a ticket.” “I come from a law enforcement background,” Councilman Stephen Wellinghorst, an attorney and former prosecutor and judge in other towns, concurred. “The law is the law, and it’s a slippery slope if

you start giving some people breaks and not others.” Councilwoman Bernadette Walsh and Deputy Mayor Thomas Riche agreed that no constraints should be placed on enforcement, but they liked suggestions that the parking meters be calibrated at 50 cents an hour on the streets and 25 cents an hour in parking lots with the intent of giving commuters and employees a legal place to park at reduced rates.
