Lawyers to oppose Ridgewood Water’s rate increase
by John Koster The Glen Rock Borough Council has voted to send Attorney Joseph Fiorenzo, former mayor of Wyckoff, to represent Glen Rock’s opposition to the latest rate increase by the Ridgewood Water Company. The increase is scheduled for adoption by the Ridgewood Council on Dec. 8. Fiorenzo was instrumental in researching and drafting Wyckoff’s initial legal action against the previous rate increase, and Glen Rock has now retained him for a maximum legal fee of $7,500 to oppose an additional five percent for customers in Glen Rock, Midland Park, Ridgewood, and Wyckoff. Wyckoff Township Attorney Rob Landell will represent his municipality at the Dec. 8 meeting. Several members of the Wyckoff Township Committee have also indicated that they expect to be present. Glen Rock Mayor John van Keuren stated in a resolution that “Ridgewood has improperly attempted to raise water rates of the residents of Glen Rock by 21 percent, which actions are detrimental to the residents of Glen Rock....the Borough of Glen Rock is desirous of joining the lawsuit as a named plaintiff in order to protect the borough and its residents against the unjustified water rate increase.” The Glen Rock Borough Council voted unanimously to approve the resolution on Dec. 2. The legal case is officially called “Township of Wyckoff v. the Village of Ridgewood” and is pending in New Jersey Superior Court. Glen Rock had held back from formally joining the lawsuit, though much of the information turned up by an audit of the Ridgewood Water Company was cited as accurate by Glen Rock officials. Ridgewood Village Manager Ken Gabbert said that the rate increases are necessary to protect the quality of the water. Wyckoff and Glen Rock have asserted that some of the water fees paid by residents outside Ridgewood have been used to subsidize Ridgewood municipal services that have no direct bearing on delivery of water to customers outside Ridgewood’s boundaries.
