Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • December 8, 2010 Glen Rock Courtney Wong, a Glen Rock resident and 2005 Glen Rock High School graduate, will host a Dec. 19 fundraiser that will feature products made by Guatemalan artisans. This event will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Community Church of Glen Rock at 354 Rock Road. Shoppers will be directed to the Fellowship Hall Foyer (Hamilton Avenue entrance). The fundraiser will benefit Limitless Horizons Ixil, a sustainable community development organization that serves the secluded indigenous Mayan Ixil community of Chajul, Guatemala. Various handmade items will be sold, including woven scarves and bookmarks, bags, jewelry, stuffed animals, and holiday ornaments. Limitless Horizons Ixil (LHI) is a US 501(c)3 nonprofit and Guatemalan nongovernmental organization working in partnership with the Maya Ixil community to create opportunities for empowerment and to advance sustainable community development. LHI works in the Ixil region of the western highlands of Guatemala, which has maintained its rich Mayan traditions, dress, and language, despite being particularly hard hit by the 36-year-long Guatemalan civil war. It is an area marked by significant poverty and post- Fundraiser to feature Guatemalan artisans’ products war trauma. The community has a corn-based agricultural economy, and the average income is $1 to $3 per day, leaving many adults struggling daily to feed their families. Less than five percent of children graduate from middle school and 75 percent of the adult population is illiterate. LHI manages a number of community programs in Chajul, focusing on education, community development, and women’s empowerment. The organization operates a scholarship program for over 75 students with built-in support services, including tutoring, computer classes, a study center with computer lab and library, access to a work study program, guidance counseling, activities, and field trips. LHI also runs a safe wood-burning stove initiative, an artisan program to develop local handicrafts for outside markets, and coordinates sustainable tourism opportunities and community workshops on topics like organic agriculture. This year, LHI also opened Chajul’s first public library to serve the county’s population of 50,000 people. Wong earned a degree in public policy from Brown University in 2009 and worked in Chajul as LHI’s international coordinator from Sept. 2009 through Nov. 2010. She is now a member of the LHI Board of Directors.
