DARE program receives $3,500 from Camp Yaw Paw
by John Koster Two delegates from the Camp Yaw Paw Foundation of Ridgewood and Glen Rock bestowed a grant of $3,500 upon the Glen Rock Drugs and Alcohol Resistance Program at last week’s meeting of the Glen Rock Borough Council. The money will be used to provide materials and supplies for DARE, which teaches youngsters how to resist drugs and alcohol. Robert Saydah and Robert Shoemaker, both Glen Rock residents and trustees of the Yaw Paw Camp Foundation, presented the check to Glen Rock Police Officer Matt Stanislao, Glen Rock’s DARE officer, who had just returned from a trip to Minneapolis where he was certified as an instructor of beginning DARE instructors. “Wow!” Patrolman Stanislao said when he saw the amount of the check. He thanked Saydah and Shoemaker for supporting the program. Glen Rock Mayor John van Keuren joined in the brief and informal presentation ceremony as the other council members applauded. The Glen Rock Police Department has offered the DARE program at all public elementary schools and at the Academy of Our Lady since 1993. The program uses a combination of street theater and lectures on the health, legal, and public safety issues related to drug and alcohol abuse. DARE courses were originally offered at the fifth grade level, but have since been expanded to cover the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Camp Yaw Paw, located in the Ramapo Mountains, is a rustic Scout camp around a mountain lake. The Yaw Paw Camp Foundation is a non-profit group dedicated to supporting the youth of Ridgewood and Glen Rock. When Mayor van Keuren asked for a show of hands from people who had benefited from Camp Yaw Paw, a number of hands went up -- including his own.

A request by Glen Rock Councilman Mike O’Hagan that motorists slow down and show some courtesy received a strong support from life-time resident Jim Seaton, who saw a chance to raise some revenue. “I just ask people to slow down. Take the extra five minutes around the schools,” said O’Hagan. “We all know it’s a busy season. Take the extra time and exercise common

courtesy.” O’Hagan, who was responsible for the installation of speed bumps on Doremus Avenue and elsewhere, frequently urges motorists to show more concern for children and one another when driving in Glen Rock, where a number of children have been killed by cars in recent decades.
