Page 6 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • December 1, 2010 The Ridgewood Board of Education recently honored Mike Serek, an employee of the Bennett Company, for his courage and quick-thinking when he extinguished a roof fire at Hawes School. Serek was working on the expansion of the Hawes School at about 7:10 a.m. on Nov. 8 when he noticed flames. Ridgewood Superintendent of Schools Dr. David Fishbein said Serek, without regard for his own safety, attempted to douse the flames with a fire extinguisher and turned off the gas supply to the roof unit. Dr. Fishbein said Serek’s quick action had minimized the amount of 4-29-09 karen/janine damage to the roof and to the classroom beneath it. Several local volunteer departments joined Ridgewood in EmmanuelHelp3x.75(4-29-09) putting out the rest of the fire and securing the grounds. 3 x .75 Ridgewood Board of Education commended The Serek, and forwarded a copy of the resolution to the Bennett Company. Clothes were provided by several area merchants including Midland Park’s Sal Lauretta’s and Kristin Dahl. Salon Elisabeth located on Central Avenue in Midland Park generously styled each model’s hair at no charge. The event raised $10,000 for Eastern Christian School.
