December 1, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 3 Glen Rock Survey reveals rear-yard pickup still important by John Koster The results of the Glen Rock Resident Services survey indicate a generally high level of satisfaction with municipal services and support for rear-yard garbage pickup. The survey was conducted exclusively by computer. Those who do not own a computer or feel comfortable with using one were able to visit the Glen Rock Public Library, where residents could complete their responses at a library computer with the help of a staffer or volunteer. The majority of people responding appeared to have been mature, but not elderly, residents: 645 of 1,047 had lived in Glen Rock more than 15 years, another 265 six to 15 years, and only 137 had lived in Glen Rock less than five years. The single largest group of respondents (445 people) gave their ages as 40 to 55, with the second largest group (254 respondents) being 56 to 65. Only 144 people under 40 and 201 people over 65 responded. The majority had no children in the public schools: 619 respondents have no children, and 428 have children. School services were not mentioned in the survey, which was confined to the portion of the budgeted items covering administration, safety, roads, and the library. A little more than half of the residents said police presence was “about right,” while almost 30 percent said police presence was “more than sufficient” and about 10 percent said police presence was “not adequate.” Another seven percent skipped the question. Some 655 residents said hours to obtain police reports were adequate, 13.8 percent said hours were more than adequate, and nine percent said hours were inadequate. Fifty-two people skipped the “garbage” question, but of the 995 people who responded, 454 rated rear yard garbage collection as “very important,” 241 said rear- Secor Farms Christmas Trees  Wreaths  Poinsettias  Holiday Greens  Holiday Decorations  yard pickup was “somewhat important,” and 300 said it was “not so important.” Residents who are concerned about taxes had claimed at several council meetings that rear-yard pickup was unimportant if money could be saved, but the survey suggested that rear-yard pickup has strong support. However, the numbers split three ways on frequency of pickup, with twice-a-week pick-up “important” to 345 respondents, “somewhat important” to 336, and “not so important” to 314. This suggests that cuts in frequency would be more acceptable than having residents bring their garbage cans to the curb.
