Toy Drive underway Glen Rock High School senior David Engle is collecting toys for the Paterson Boys and Girls Club. The club needs over 800 toys to give to children as holiday presents. Donations of unwrapped toys for children ages six through 18 may be dropped off in the box located in the Glen Rock Public Library, 315 Rock Road in Glen Rock. The drive will run through Dec. 17. Register for preschool programs The Glen Rock Jewish Center is offering a winter session of its Toddler Time program, and is preparing for registration for its fall 2011 preschool classes. Registration is now open for the Winter Session of Toddler Time (formerly Mommy and Me), at the Glen Rock Jewish Center. This program for children 12 to 24 months of age and a parent or caregiver will meet on Wednesdays from 9:15 to 10:30 a.m., beginning Jan. 5. The program will run through Feb. 23. The program, facilitated by Merri Kapiloff, an experienced child life specialist, will consist of a combination of arts and crafts, music, songs, stories, indoor and outdoor play, and weekly adult discussions on age-appropriate topics of special interest. Toddler Time is filled on a “first-come” basis and is limited to 10 child/adult pairs. Glen Rock Jewish Center Nursery School will open registration for new students for 2011-12 on Dec. 21. This state-licensed preschool offers classes for two-, three-, and four-year-olds, afternoon Kindergarten Enrichment (with local transportation), Toddler Time, and Summer Day Camp. All teachers are certified and offer a wide range of activities with an emphasis on self expression, individuality, and creativity. Professionally taught weekly classes in yoga and music are part of the curriculum for all age groups. Three- and four-year-olds go on at least two field trips a year. All activities are hands-on and include arts and crafts, cooking, creative dramatics, nature and the environment, puppetry, science, language arts, and more. Flexible scheduling is one of the things that sets this program apart from others. Parents are encouraged to create a nursery school schedule that works best to fit the needs of their families. The Glen Rock Community School will present the Unicorne Dance Ensemble under the direction of Denise Piccino of Hawthorne in the full length holiday classic ‘The Nutcracker’ on Saturday December 4 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Glen Rock Jr. and Sr. High School auditorium at 600 Harristown Road, Glen Rock. The role of Clara will be shared by Claire Beezley and Julia Fish of Glen Rock (pictured at right). Fritz, her little brother, will be danced by Asha Shetler, also of Glen Rock. Dancing the Nutcracker will be Celeste Joyce of Fair Lawn. The mysterious Herr Drosselmeyer will be portrayed by Rodger Yaden, formerly of Ridgewood. The Snow Queen will be danced by Christine Yarish of Oakland and Naomi Arad Broome will dance the delicate Sugar Plum Fairy. The cast is completed by students in the ballet program at the Glen Rock Community School. The students live in surrounding towns including Glen Rock, Ridgewood, Fair Lawn, Oakland, Waldwick, Rochelle Park, and Hawthorne. They range in age from 3 ½ to adult. Group to discuss Pearl Harbor Day book On Pearl Harbor Day, Tuesday, Dec. 7, at 7:30 p.m., the Glen Rock Library’s Nonfiction Book Discussion Group will tackle “Shockwave: Countdown to Hiroshima” by Stephen Walker. Walker provides a detailed history of the atomic bomb from the drawing board to the horrors expe-
rienced on the ground. Walker examines all sides of this controversial event, focusing on the important roles of perception and memory. Multiple copies of the book are available at the reference desk. This informally run discussion group welcomes people to participate or just sit back and observe.
