Village recreation collects for needy The Ridgewood Recreation Department invites the public to help decorate the tree at the Stable with gifts of mittens, gloves, hats, and scarves that will benefit those in need. This year, all donations will be delivered to Shelter our Sisters in Hackensack. To learn more about the organization, visit www.shelteroursisters.org. In addition, a Toys for Tots collection box is also available through the Saddle River Detachment #1211 Marine Corps League. New and unwrapped toys and games will be accepted through Monday, Dec. 20. Participants sought for Alumni Art Show The Ridgewood High School Department of Art & Design is looking for alumni to participate in the Fifth Annual Alumni Art Show. The exhibit, which will feature work created after high school, will be held at the high school’s Carroll Art Gallery, Room 135, from Dec. 20 through Jan. 14. There will be a reception for the artists on Thursday, Jan. 6 from 3 to 5 p.m. To participate, contact the department of art and design at (201) 670-2800, extension 20542, or e-mail the department in care of bnoto@ridgewood.k12.nj.us. All students, alumni, friends, family, and staff are invited to the reception and to view the exhibit. The gallery is open during school hours. ‘A Christmas Carol’ to be presented The Traveling Lantern Theater Company will present the Dickens holiday classic, “A Christmas Carol,” Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. at the Ridgewood Public Library. This Family Fun Day program is sponsored by Friends of the Ridgewood
Library. Tickets are $5 and may be purchased online at www.ridgewoodlibrary.org. Friends members receive premium seating. Traveling Lantern has been educating and entertaining children nationwide for the past 25 years. The group’s mission is to bring great stories to life in an active theater experience. Chanukah Celebration and Open House set Everyone is invited to Temple Israel of Ridgewood’s annual Chanukah celebration and Prospective Members’ Open House on Sunday, Dec. 5 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Participants will enjoy a magic show, latkes, a dreidel spinning contest, and a musical performance featuring the children of Temple Israel’s Religious School. Synagogue professional staff and members will give tours of the facility, and provide information about Temple Israel’s religious school and social and educational programming for everyone from infants through adults. The temple is located at 475 Grove Street in Ridgewood. Soup and sandwich event slated On Sunday, Dec. 5 at 11:30 a.m., the Health Ministry of Ridgewood’s Old Paramus Reformed Church will present another in its series of soup and sandwich luncheons. The event is modeled after the early Christians simple meal. Guest speaker and potter craftsman Ray Boswell will bring an Advent message as he invites the audience to participate in construction of votive lamps, which be will fire at his studio in Sugar Loaf, New York and return to the craft makers. Members of the community are welcome at this event, which will be held in the church’s barrier-free Education Building at 660 East Glen Avenue at Route 17 South. A goodwill offering will be accepted. Children’s Cookie Concert planned On Dec. 5, Ridgewood’s Old Paramus Reformed Church will host a Children’s Cookie Concert for families with children in elementary school. The program will be held from 3 to 3:45 p.m. Everyone in the congregation, and friends and guests from the wider community, are cordially invited to this intergenerational/interfaith event.
