Borough council mixes business with pleasure
by John Koster Cutting the cake for the temporary farewell of Glen Rock Borough Clerk Jacqueline Scalia and accepting two professional-quality photographs from former Councilwoman Carol Knapp and her husband Hal Knapp were the highlights of last week’s public council meeting. The session was Scalia’s last before she begins her maternity leave, so the council celebrated with a cake shared among council members, staff, residents, and volunteer community workers who were in attendance. Mayor John van Keuren and the council also gratefully accepted two large framed photographs of Glen Rock scenes taken by Rick French, the Knapps’ son-in-law, on the eve of the Fourth of July. “This year, our family was with us and we all attended the concert,” Knapp said. “Our son-in-law, Rich French, a photographer, took advantage of the kaleidoscope of colors in the setting sun and took photos. We, Hal and I, liked the photos, had them enlarged, and frame them. We did not want to put them away in a photo album. We would like others to enjoy the photos of a moment in time when there was music, singing, and anticipation of the celebration of freedom’s foundation in this country. We give these two photos to the borough.” Knapp, who opted not to seek reelection a few years ago, was for many years the Glen Rock Council’s ranking incumbent, and taught at Saint Catharine’s School. Her husband Hal was a school principal in Glen Rock for several decades, and both remain active in volunteer activities. In other business, the borough the council granted a liquor license to the Greek Village II, a Greek-style taverna, with a bid of $126,000. The borough also accepted a bid from a company seeking a location on the recycling area monopole, with an offer of $16,800. The council also accepted a bid for a 4x4 wheel loader backhoe for $59,452 with a (continued on page 17)
