Area August 25, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 7 This week, 11 volunteers from Bergen County will travel to New Orleans to join hundreds of others at “Fifty for Five,” a five-day event to rebuild 50 homes, leading up to the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. The event is sponsored by Rebuilding Together, the nation’s leading nonprofit working to preserve affordable homeownership. The local team includes Ridgewood couple Mary Lou Posten and Wayne Brewster. Other members of the team are Thomas Ela of Wyckoff, Alison Keenan, Colette Lasalle, Nancy Mecca, Alfred Nebiar, Ruth Nebiar, Mark Sciacca, JoEllen VanderVliet, and Robert Williams. The volunteers will spend five days in the Chantilly neighborhood of New Orleans, working on homes destroyed by hurricanes in 2005. Posten, a past Rebuilding Together Bergen County board member, and her husband have worked on many local RTBC projects and made previous trips to Louisiana with Rebuilding Together. Each “Rebuild 1,000” trip to the Gulf helps bring Rebuilding Together closer to its goal of rehabilitating 1,000 homes in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The event also seeks to spark national attention for the needs of the region’s low-income homeowners. Rebuilding Together Bergen County is one of more than 200 local affiliates of the national organization.
