Page 6 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • August 25, 2010 Emmanuel asks... Can You Help? Prospective council by John Koster The deadline for the pickup of nominating petitions for the off-season November election is drawing near, with eight packets picked up thus far and none of them yet returned to the Ridgewood Village Clerk’s office. Village Clerk Heather Mailander declined to name the eight people who have picked up petition packets as poten- Ridgewood members urged: Pick up petitions Ridgewood elections do not permit candidates to run as Democrats, Republicans, or members of other national parties, but allow slates or teams made up of local people. Elections are held every two years, with three candidates running for one election and two for the next, so the council always contains some experienced members, even if no incumbents run or are re-elected. Mailander said that, in theory, a candidate could pick up a packet as late as Sept. 8 and receive a spot on the ballot if he or she were to receive enough signatures, but in practice it would be a good idea to pick up a packet as soon as possible. Packets are available at the clerk’s office on the fifth floor of Ridgewood Village Hall during regular business hours. MAKE WEEDS AND 4-29-09 karen/janine UNWANTED GRASS GO AWAY! Once the signatures have been approved, after comparison with signatures on Ridgewood’s voter registration lists, any qualified resident automatically appears on the non-partisan ballot in the general election in November. Ridgewood usually holds its non-partisan council elections in May, but this year’s unusual November contest follows the untimely death of Councilwoman Anne Zusy. Council members decided that, instead of filling her vacant seat by appointment, they would allow candidates to file for a contested election in November. The winner of the one-seat, off-season contest will serve until June 30, 2012, when the successful contestants of the regular non-partisan election are installed.
