Ridgewood August 25, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 5 Council introduces no-raise ordinance for supervisors by John Koster The Ridgewood Village Council has introduced a zeroincrease supervisors’ salary ordinance covering 2010, with two percent increases and an insurance give-back by the employees’ union for the next three years. Ridgewood recently eliminated more than 30 full-time positions due to budgetary constraints, with some longterm employees opting for retirement, and others reduced to part-time positions or forced to accept layoffs and termination of employment. The ordinance to be heard at the public council meeting in September establishes a zero salary increase for 2010, with a two percent increase in 2011 and a second two percent increase in 2012. The union will pay $20 per paycheck toward health benefits in 2010 and 2011, and will cover the amount stipulated in the state statute in 2012. The salary schedules list salaries by minimum and maximum ranges. The 2010 ranges include: building sub-code official and inspector, $67,172 to $80,033; supervisor of sanitation, $72,463 to $81,838; parks supervisor, $64,305 to $73,683; chief water treatment plant operator, $82,270 to $95,081; assistant chief water plant operator, $72,868 to $81,838; water foreman, $61,988 to $77,161, assistant water foreman, $60,583 to $67,980; assistant foreman of recycling, $60,583 to $67,980; fleet manager, $84,707 to $91,341; and recreation supervisor, $39,553 to $54,862. Salary ranges also include: tree supervisor, $66,328 to $77,368; assistant sanitation foreman, $60,583 to $67,980; supervisor of public works, $67,390 to $77,161; supervisor of billing and collecting, $51,032 to $66,502; and sanitation inspector, $49,421 to $60,496. The council said that tough times have made it vital to cut the salary item of the budget, along with a number of other reductions. Theft, fraud cases reported to police A pair of fraudulent financial transactions and a pair of attempted burglaries have been reported to the Ridgewood Police Department, along with a theft from a parked car. On Aug. 14, the Bank of America branch at 25 North Maple Avenue reported what appeared to be glue residue on the bank’s ATM. Subsequently, three persons reported they had noticed fraudulent transactions from their accounts after using the ATM at that branch. The matter is under investigation by the Ridgewood Police Department and police recommend that all ATM users check their accounts frequently for suspicious activity and notify the bank if anything appears to be out of order. On Aug. 12, a Ridgewood resident reported that she had posted an ad for tutoring on Craigslist. A person who made contact with her sent a check for more than the contracted amount, and suggested the Ridgewood woman wire the extra money to a person in Pennsylvania. The Ridgewood woman deposited the check and wired the money as requested. The Ridgewood woman later learned the check was invalid and the money she wired had been removed from her account. Police said this scam occurs frequently during off-site purchases of items advertised electronically. The seller pays an excessive amount and asks that the buyer send the seller the difference by electronic transaction or personal check. The seller then keeps the money and the seller’s check bounces. On Aug. 12, a North Van Dien Avenue resident reported that someone had broken a sliding glass door in the rear of her home, but apparently did not gain entry. Also on Aug. 12, a West End Avenue resident reported finding pry marks on the front and rear doors of his elderly parents’ home. He was unsure if the marks represented a burglary attempt or a health care worker’s attempt to get into the house after misplacing a key. On Aug. 13, a Ridgewood resident reported that someone had stolen an iPod from her car while the vehicle was parked at Lester Stable. Police are investigating and urge all residents not to leave visible valuables in parked cars, even if the cars are locked. But STILL can’t lose that Tummy or Cellulite?
