All paid participants will receive a race day T-shirt to commemorate this family event. Registration will begin at 6:45 a.m. The 5K will begin at 8:30 a.m., with awards at 9:15 a.m. There will be a Junior Mile at 9:30 a.m. and a Fun Run for children ages two through four and five through seven at 9:45 a.m. The Junior Mile and Fun Run Awards will take place at 10 a.m. Registration is $20 for the 5K and $10 for the Junior Mile/Fun Run. Pre-registration should be completed online at http://glenrockjaycees.org/aboretum_run.htm by 6 p.m. on Sept. 5. The Glen Rock Jaycees, a community service organization, provides support to many local groups, including sports organizations, the volunteer fire department, and ambulance corps, and scholarships for high school graduates. The group sponsors children’s events such as the Easter Egg Hunt, camp out, fishing derby, and Santa’s train ride. Sleepover planned for ‘Mockingjay’ release At 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 24, the third and final installment of The Hunger Games trilogy, “Mockingjay,” will be released, and Glen Rock Public Library and Books, Bytes, and Beyond will celebrate with a sleepover/read over for teens in grades six through 12. Activities will begin at 11 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 23. Refreshments will be provided. Teens who pre-ordered their copies of “Mockingjay”
from Books, Bytes, and Beyond may pick up this exciting finale at midnight. Anyone who does not sign up for the sleepover will have to leave at 12:30 a.m. Winners of the Hunger Games competition will receive copies of the book as a prize. Permission slips, available at the Glen Rock Library reference desk, are required in order to participate in the sleepover. Sleepover participants are required to bring sleeping bags. Breakfast will be provided, and the event will conclude at 9 a.m. when the library opens on Aug. 24. American Legion recalls Japanese surrender American Legion Post 145 invites the public to its open meeting on Thursday, Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Glen Rock Municipal Annex. The program will include a talk on the USS Missouri, where the Japanese signed their surrender to the Allied Forces on Sept. 2, 1945. This will be followed by a film highlighting the ship and the event. General McArthur and Admirals Halsey and Nimitz will be featured. Photos and memorabilia will be on display. Refreshments will be served. Entertainment books being offered American Legion Post 145 is now selling Entertainment 2011 books. The cost of the publication, which offers discounts at local and national businesses and restaurants, is $30. The books are valid through Nov. 2, 2011. Proceeds benefit the veterans in the Paramus home. Maple Avenue, Glen Rock. On Aug. 25, the film presentation will lift spirits as two adventurers float in a house to the South American jungle. (Rain date: Aug. 26.) This family movie is free for Glen Rock families thanks to a generous donation from an anonymous sponsor. Refreshments will be available. Show time will be at dusk: approximately 8:30 p.m. Group seeks new members The M.O.T.H.E.R.S. group of Saint Catharine’s parish welcomes new members. The group, which is open to working and stay-at-home moms with children of all ages, provides support, knowledge, and friendships while promoting a sense of community. Events for children, families, and couples take place throughout the school year, including programs for moms both with and without their children. Spiritual and social events include playgroups, book club, yoga, recipe groups, and spring socials. M.O.T.H.E.R.S. also is involved with charitable works in the community. Shawl Ministry to meet The Saint Catharine Shawl Ministry will host a “Gift of the Shawl” event on Saturday, Sept. 25 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 905 South Maple Avenue in Glen Rock. This nondenominational program will bring knitters and crocheters together for an exchange of patterns, and a sharing of projects and ideas. Attendees will have an opportunity to knit or crochet an item to donate, to reflect on the ministry, and to meet others. The day will begin at 9 a.m. with Mass. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
