HILT plans events The annual Patio Party for HILT members will be held Sept. 8 from noon to 2 p.m. on the Community Center Patio. A box lunch will be served. Paid members may register by calling the recreation office at (201) 670-5560. On Sept. 16, HILT will travel to the Tuckerton Seaport Museum, a working maritime village on the Tuckerton Creek. This one-of-a-kind attraction brings the Jersey Shore maritime traditions of the past and present to visitors. Attendees will discover the Jersey Shore’s heritage and the interaction between culture and nature on the Barnegat Bay. Lunch will follow at the Mud City Crab House in Manahawkin. The bus will depart from Graydon Pool at 8 a.m. (boarding will begin at 7:45 a.m.) and will return at approximately 5:45 p.m. The cost is $35 for HILT members; $40 for non-members. Ridgewood residents who are at least 55 years of age are invited to join Highlights in Leisure Time, a senior organization under the auspices of the Ridgewood Department of Parks and Recreation. Monthly meetings include entertainment, informational presentations, and refreshments. Annual membership dues are $15. High Holy Day tickets available Temple Israel and Jewish Community Center of Ridgewood, 475 Grove Street, Ridgewood, has a limited number of High Holy Day tickets for sale. Those who have never been previously affiliated with Temple Israel may purchase tickets for this year’s services. If the purchaser activates Temple Israel membership by Dec. 31, the ticket purchase price will be deducted from the membership fees. MOMs holds monthly meetings with speakers and group discussions and special interest groups such as book club, recipe club, tennis, playgroups, faith sharing groups, and more. Free workshop for adoptive parents Children’s Aid and Family Services will present a free workshop, “The Adopted Child’s Journey: Questions along the Way,” at its Family and Adoption Services Center, 148 Prospect Street, Ridgewood, on Thursday, Sept. 16 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. The workshop will address issues that often arise for adopted children, including school and peer concerns, questions about identity and loss, and how parents can help children navigate those issues. Based on the book “Twenty Things Adopted Kids Wish Their Adoptive Families Knew,” by Sherrie Eldridge, the workshop will be led by Dana W. Fried, assistant director of the New Jersey Adoption Resource Clearing House, and Kinship Legal Guardianship Clearing House, both programs of Children’s Aid and Family Services. Valley offers stress management program The Valley Hospital’s Integrative Healing Services is offering a free orientation session about the benefits of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction on Wednesday, Sept. 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Luckow Pavilion, located at One Valley Health Plaza in Paramus. Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction is a unique meditation technique that enables practitioners to develop a heightened awareness of their bodies and emotions, to take charge of their lives, and learn to consciously and systemically work with their own stress, pain, illness, and the challenges and demands of everyday life. The program is taught by Jodie Katz, M.D, a family physician, certified yoga instructor in Structural Yoga™ and registered yoga teacher with the Yoga Alliance. Dr. Katz also serves as a staff physician at Valley Health Medical Group’s Waldwick practice.
The next eight-week program runs from Sept. 29 through Nov. 17. Registration begins at YWCA Bergen County Registration for the YWCA Bergen County’s fall session will has begun. Classes run from Sept. 7 through Oct. 30, and members may register online, by phone, or in person. The YWCA offers dozens of fitness, wellness, and enrichment programs for all ages. Red Cross certified swim classes are available for swimmers at every age and level. Priority swim registration is also available, which allows members to prepay for sessions one through five to guarantee space in swim group lessons. International Medalist and fourth degree black belt Christine Maurer teaches U.S.J.A. Judo for all ages and Lil’ Dragons Judo classes for young children. Participants learn self-defense and build self-confidence and discipline. For preteens there is Girl Power, a program designed to promote self-esteem and a positive body image through aerobic exercise and lessons about making healthy choices. Adults have four new fitness options available to them: Morning Mile Plus Fast Firming, Walk-Fit Circuit Express, Walk-Fit with a Twist, and Take 10 Total Body Training. In addition, there are a variety of adult programs ranging from Zumba® and Pilates to aqua-fitness. Drop-in child care is available at the 112 Oak Street, Ridgewood facility. During the trip there will be an overnight stop at “Das Dutch Village” in Columbiana, Ohio for a dinner show and time to visit the shops; and visits to the Mansion Museum in Wheeling, the Festival of Lights, a tour of Wheeling, the Eckhart House, the Carriage House Glass Museum, the Hilltop Shops and Gardens, and the Good Zoo “Winter Fantasy.” Included in the cost of is $499 per person, based on double occupancy, attendees will have deluxe motor coach transportation, accommodations for three nights, three breakfasts, and three dinners. Reservations and a deposit of $200 must be made by Sept. 1. Membership in the Eastern Star is not required.
