The New Jersey Metro Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society recently honored Meaghan Sorbo of Ridgewood during its annual scholarship awards ceremony. This year, the chapter awarded scholarships to 73 area students, distributing a total of $81,000. One of those deserving students was Sorbo, who will enter her senior year at Saint Peter’s College this fall. She is studying marketing management and business law. The economic impact of MS is substantial. Direct and indirect costs of MS, including lost wages, (even for those with insurance coverage) are estimated at more than $69,000 annually, with a total lifetime cost per family of $3 million. lenges make funding a college education that much harder. “We know so many families struggling to cope with the financial impact of MS,” said Jim Roberts, president of New Jersey Metro Chapter of the National MS Society. “This is why we are fighting this often hidden effect of multiple sclerosis – because MS shouldn’t stand in the way of an education.” For more information about the New Jersey Metro Chapter’s Scholarship Program, contact Patti Pasquino at (201) 967-5599, extension 206 or patti. pasquino@nmss.org. A Haledon man told Ridgewood police that someone stole his $1,500 camera after he left it on a bench at the skate park near Graydon Pool while he walked across the street to get a drink at Kings on the other side of North Maple Avenue. The Aug. 4 incident, now under investigation by the Ridgewood Detective Bureau, was the largest of several petty thefts, including a burglary, reported over the span of a few days at the beginning of August. On Aug. 3, an Oak Street resident reported that while his family was away from home, an unknown person entered his home through an unlocked window and stole video games. On Aug. 4, Rite Air Pharmacy reported a juvenile shoplifter. The Allendale youngster was arrested and charged with shoplifting, and then released to his parents. On Aug. 6, Police Detective Douglas Henky noticed a Paramus man walking on East Ridgewood Avenue and remembered that the 51-year-old man was wanted on an

outstanding warrant from Paramus. The man was arrested and turned over to the Paramus Police Department. The Ridgewood Police Department has also investigated incidents involving potentially dangerous assaults on a bicyclist and a motorist. On Aug. 4 at 6:45 p.m., a Hawthorne resident reported that she was struck by a frozen drink, thrown from a vehicle by a passing motorist, while she was riding her bicycle on North Maple Avenue. The incident is under police investigation. On Aug. 6, at 5:45 p.m., a Ridgewood resident reported that she was driving on Belair Road when she was struck in the face by something that landed in her lap. The object turned out to be a BB, a projection from a BB gun. Police officers located three juveniles and took them into custody in relation to this incident. The juveniles were released into the custody of their parents pending juvenile court action. J. KOSTER
