August 11, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 3 Ridgewood Graydon parking fee plan currently under review by John Koster Ridgewood Councilman Paul Aronsohn temporarily headed off a plan to charge parking fees for 70 spaces at the Graydon South parking lot to provide some extra revenue for Ridgewood. The plan is on hold until the fee scale can be examined to make sure that Graydon South parking fees would be the same as those at the Ridgewood High School parking lot. Village Manager Ken Gabbert suggested the plan to charge $350 a year for the impending school year and $425 for the following year for 70 spaces at the Graydon South parking lot. The policy, he estimated, could raise $25,000 to $30,000 for tax relief. The parking spaces would also be available to commuters who wanted to park their cars and take the bus from Maple Avenue nearby. Aronsohn said he was against the fee policy in principal because it would add one more burden to families with youngsters who are already hard pressed by the economy. Councilwoman Bernadette Walsh initially leaned toward supporting the policy, which could have been introduced as an ordinance for adoption at this week’s public council meeting. Mayor Keith Killion sat quietly for a long time as he contemplated the issue. “It’s not an easy one,” Killion said. Discussion among council members and Gabbert showed that high school students already have the option of leasing parking spaces on Ridgewood High School property, reportedly for $250 a year, and that the spaces are so popular that they were available only on a lottery basis. The First Presbyterian Church, a block away from the high school, also leases parking spaces and reportedly accumulates about $32,000 a year in revenue. The other three members of council -- Aronsohn remained opposed -- appeared to have worked out a consensus that the proposal might be worth an ordinance if the cost of the parking spaces at Graydon South were offered at the same price as the limited number of spaces near Ridgewood High School. The parking spaces at First Presbyterian Church would not be part of the equation, Mayor Killion said, because the church is a separate entity from Ridgewood municipal government. Gabbert was asked to study the matter further, but no ordinance introduction was authorized at last week’s work session. BK BOOKKEEPING & PAYROLL SERVICE, LLC Wipers Streaking? Change Them Now!
