Local student recognized Kristen Vega of Ridgewood has been named to the Dean’s List at Caldwell College for the spring 2010 semester. In order to achieve this honor, students must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Johnny Retro celebrates ‘80s music Emmanuel Baptist Church of Ridgewood, located on the corner of East Ridgewood Avenue and Hope Street, will host a Live ‘80s Music Explosion with Johnny Retro on Saturday, Aug. 14 at 6:30 p.m. Join bandleader Tom Brigliadoro for this flashback concert, which is a benefit for Emmanuel’s environmental projects. Temple welcomes prospective members Temple Israel and JCC will host two Open Houses for prospective members at 475 Grove Street in Ridgewood. The first will be held Friday, Aug. 27 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. followed by Shabbat services, and the second will be on Sunday, Aug. 29 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. All are welcome. Registration begins at YWCA Bergen County Registration for the YWCA Bergen County’s fall session will begin Monday, Aug. 16 at 8:30 a.m. Classes run from Sept. 7 through Oct. 30, and members may register online, by phone, or in person. The YWCA offers dozens of fitness, wellness, and enrichment programs for all ages. Red Cross certified swim classes are available for swimmers at every age and level. Priority swim registration is also available, which allows members to prepay for sessions one through five to guarantee space in swim group lessons. International Medalist and fourth degree black belt Christine Maurer teaches U.S.J.A. Judo for all ages and Lil’ Dragons Judo classes for young children. Participants learn self-defense and build self-confidence and discipline. For preteens there is Girl Power, a program designed to promote self-esteem and a positive body image through aerobic exercise and lessons about making healthy choices. Adults have four new fitness options available to them: Morning Mile Plus Fast Firming, Walk-Fit Circuit Express, Walk-Fit with a Twist, and Take 10 Total Body Training. In addition, there are a variety of adult programs ranging from Zumba® and Pilates to aqua-fitness. Drop-in child care is available at the 112 Oak Street, Ridgewood facility. HILT plans August events The next HILT meeting will be held Aug. 12 at 10 a.m. A 35-minute documentary entitled “A Walk through Historic Ridgewood,” will be shown and Village Manager Kenneth Gabbert will address questions and concerns regarding the future of senior programming. HILT members will travel to Spring Lake on Aug. 19. The group will visit Doolan’s for lunch and a show produced by Mike Byrne. The Byrne brothers, Mike, Bobby and Jimmy, will offer a program that includes the music of Neil Diamond, Patsy Kline, or Barbra Streisand. The bus will depart from Graydon Pool at 9:30 a.m. and return at 5:45 p.m. The cost is $43 for HILT members; $48 for non-
members. Ridgewood residents who are age 55 and older are invited to join Highlights in Leisure Time. This senior organization is run under the auspices of the Ridgewood’s Department of Parks and Recreation. Monthly meetings include entertainment or informational presentations followed by refreshments. Annual membership dues are $15. YWCA offers programs for students Registration for the YWCA’s before and after school programs will remain open through Aug. 13. YWCA Bergen County offers programs for children in kindergarten through grade six. Programs match the best interests of both parent and child, combining guidance and security with activities designed to inspire creative thinking and individual expression. Children who need to do homework are guaranteed a quiet space to do so.
Programs are offered at schools in eight Bergen County districts: Allendale, Cresskill, Dumont, Hillsdale, Old Tappan, Oradell, Ridgewood, and Westwood. An after kindergarten program is available in Oradell. All programs are licensed by the State of New Jersey, Department of Children & Families. Chorus has updated phone number The Harmony Celebration Chorus of Ridgewood is seeking new singers to join its ranks. This all-woman, award-winning a cappella chorus is a local chapter of Sweet Adelines International.
