Visitors from Onomachi meet borough officials
by John Koster Glen Rock Mayor John van Keuren and Council President Mary Jane Surrago were on hand to meet 17 students and three chaperones from Onomachi, the town in rural Japan that regularly exchanges visitors with Glen Rock. “I’m glad they were able to return after missing last year,” Mayor van Keuren said. The Onomachi tours, originated by Glen Rock’s Kristin Stewart, who taught in Onomachi, and now sustained by Stewart and her husband Stephen O’Brien, also a former Glen Rock resident, are in their 19th year. Last year’s tour was cancelled due to a flu epidemic, and the 2002 tour in was cancelled due to the September 11 attacks, which left some Japanese parents concerned that their children might be at risk in what looked like a war zone on television. Mayor van Keuren made his annual welcoming speech in Japanese at the decorated Glen Rock Annex. Yasuo Nemoto replied in English, though this is his first trip to the United States. “I would like to thank you all for this wonderful welcoming party, which we will never forget,” said Nemoto. “We want to ask you to be patient, especially with our English.” (continued on next page)
