In May of 2008, Ron Panicucci attended the American Cancer Society’s two-day Relay for Life of Glen Rock fundraiser as a chaperone for his daughter’s team from Immaculate Heart Academy. Over the past two years, his involvement has increased -- first to forming his own fundraising team in 2009, and now to fielding a team and serving on the event committee. “I knew little about the event before attending, and it turned out to be an extremely enjoyable and rewarding weekend,” Panicucci said. “In 2009, I organized an incredible team of dedicated family and friends, and…I had a fantastic experience. Team Panicucci will be back in action for 2010.” Panicucci, a professional engineer with LAN Associates in Midland Park and a resident of North Haledon, knows that hundreds of thousands of people will hear the words “You have cancer,” this year. “Unfortunately, we all know too many friends and relatives who are suffering from -- or have succumbed to -- cancer. That’s why I have chosen to fight back against cancer by actively participating in the

relay.” The relay began in 1985, with a man who had lost his wife to cancer. Since that time, the relay has grown to include over 5,000 communities. This is the eighth year Glen Rock has been involved in relay activities. This year’s relay will take place at Glen Rock High School, 400 Hamilton Avenue, Glen Rock, from Saturday, May 15 through Sunday, May 16. Panicucci said his personal goal is to complete 25 miles. He has set a personal fundraising goal of $2,500 and a team goal of $5,000. The relay, which is considered a celebration of life, brings the community together in a unified effort to fight cancer and symbolizes the fight that cancer patients must face after they are diagnosed with cancer. The light and the darkness of the day and night parallel the physical effects, emotions, and mental state of a cancer patient while he or she is undergoing treatment. Relay for Life is an overnight event at which individuals and teams camp out, dance, and take turns walking or running around a track “relay” style to raise funds to fight cancer. At nightfall, participants light hundreds of luminaria around the track to honor cancer survivors and to remember those lost to the disease. The timing of each event is symbolic, and links the relay participants’ to those of cancer patients. The relay begins as the sun is starting to set. This coming darkness symbolizes the time a person is diagnosed with cancer. As night settles in, it gets colder and darker, just as the emotions of the cancer patient do.
