Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • April 28, 2010 Glen Rock Voters adopt school budget by strong margin by John Koster The majority of Glen Rock’s voters offered strong support of the local school budget, with 2,023 voters approving the local tax levy of $39,248,529 and 1,277 voting in opposition. All three incumbents were returned to their seats on the board, edging out the lone newcomer who mounted a challenge. Jacquelyn Johnson received 1,521 ballots, not enough to win one of the three seats held by Carlo Cella, who received 1,675 votes; Sanjiv Ohri, who received 1,758; and Sheldon Hirschberg, who received the top tally of 1,879. Johnson formerly worked at MetLife for 15 years, including 10 years in management. A resident of Glen Rock for almost 10 years, she has three children. Cella, a 1971 graduate of Glen Rock High School, has a bachelor’s degree in management science from Lehigh and a master’s degree in accounting from Fairleigh Dickinson. His wife, Debbie, is an art instructor at Glen Rock High School. Cella has served as president of the Glen Rock Men’s Softball League, coach for the Glen Rock Basketball Association, and coach for the Glen Rock Junior Football Association. Hirschberg is the founder and president of Hirschberg Associates, a financial advisory company located in Glen Rock. He is a graduate of Bucknell with a BA with distinction in economics, and has a master of business administration from Northwestern University. He is also a past member of the Glen Rock Baseball Association and the Glen Rock Town Fair Committee. Ohri has a bachelor’s degree in finance from India and a bachelor’s degree in information technology from Iona College, and is a project manager in the financial company. A one-term incumbent, Ohri has two children in the Coleman School. Library director rallies readers Glen Rock Library Director Roz Pelcyger is rallying library patrons to try to ward off state-imposed cuts that could threaten library programs in the borough and around Bergen County. An advocacy group formed at a meeting last week will be asked to spread the word, and to attend a state-wide rally in Trenton on May 6. Volunteers may also be asked to hand out leaflets at the borough’s two railroad stations and to find ways to help raise funds independently to help sustain services in case state cuts are made. “We must emphasize that the Borough of Glen Rock has been quite reasonable in dealing with the local Glen Rock Library budget,” Pelcyger said last week. “The issues we are facing come from the ‘invisible hand’ of the state and that the impact could be on our local library.” Residents are also being asked to contact their legislators to oppose state budget cuts to the libraries. Those cuts would impact such services as inter-library loans, Brailling, special programs for seniors and children, and staffing. J.
