Featured along with the Liszt “Piano Concerto No. 1” will be two world premieres: Lee Actor’s “Redwood Fanfare” and Hampson Sisler’s “Of Humankind.” Completing the quartet of pieces will be Franz Schubert’s “Symphony No. 8,” the “Unfinished.” Schubert’s “Unfinished” symphony is one of the most often performed works. Scholars have debated for a century and a half the reason for its lack of a third movement. Attempts have been made to complete the symphony using Schubert’s compositional scraps. Despite its truncated condition, it has become one of the best loved of Schubert’s compositions. Liszt’s “Piano Concerto No.1” was sketched in 1830 when Liszt was 19. It was not completed until 1853 and had its first performance in 1855 with the composer at the piano and composer Hector Berlioz conducting the orchestra. At the RSO’s May 7 presentation, the concerto will be performed by internationally known pianist Eduardus Halim. Sisler, composer of one of the two world premieres, is a distinguished organist and composer. Over 100 of his compositions have been published. The cathedral, located at 1047 Amsterdam Avenue in New York City, is the seat of the Episcopal Bishop of the Diocese of New York City. It is a stone Gothic Revival structure that was started in 1892 and is still under construction. It also houses one of the most magnificent organs in the world. The Cloisters, which is part of the Metropolitan Choral group to visit cathedral, Cloisters Museum, is located in New York City’s Fort Tryon Park. This landmark is devoted to the art and architecture of medieval Europe. The tour bus will depart from the Graydon Pool parking lot at 9 a.m. and return to Ridgewood at 5:30 p.m. The cost for the tour is $60 and includes the bus and all tour fees.
