Village students excel in national Latin exam
Students at Ridgewood High School and at the district’s two middle schools recently demonstrated their Latin skills in the 2010 National Latin Examination. Akari Armatas and Vidushi Sharma, both Latin II students, wrote perfect papers, 35 students won gold medals, 30 won silver medals, 24 earned magna cum laude awards, and 31 earned cum laude awards. The examination includes 40 questions that test Latin grammar and reading skills, derivative vocabulary, knowledge of Greek and Roman mythology, and Roman history. More than 150,000 Latin students from all 50 states participated this year in the high school level exam, as did students from 13 foreign countries. Ridgewood High School students who won gold medals (summa cum laude) include the following Latin II scholars: Akari Armatas, Vidushi Sharma, Megan Felder, Marc Fishbein, Aisling Casey, Ryan Ardelle, Owen Rapaport, Ilan Nathanson,
Rebecca Watson, Zoe Blecher-Cohen, William Montgomery, Tanner Garrity, Michael Johnson, Francesca Felder, Matthew Powers, Gregory Maslak, and Zachary Flicker. Gold medalists in Latin III (prose) included Mark French, Emily Riemer, Elizabeth Mattson, Trey Shore, Divya Persaud, Brody Garrity, Michael Coniglio, Megan McKeon, Alison Graham, Laura Berry, and Meredith Johnson. Latin IV (poetry) gold medalists were Jonathan Riemer, Phoebe Salzman-Cohen, Rebecca Diamond, Caroline Perry, Stephen Etna, and Christopher Given. The gold medalist in Latin V (poetryVirgil) was Zachary Marchlik. Silver medals (maxima cum laude) went to Latin I student Abigail Abric; Latin II students Youngbin Yoon, Lalka Rieger, David Suh, Alexandra Golabek, JooSung Kim, Emily Steen, Calais Bird, Michael (continued on page 19)
