“Party with a Purpose.” They had their guests bring a contribution to a Caribbean Night theme party they had organized. The decorations included an artificial palm tree, and the menu featured tropical drinks and food. Guests wore shorts and sandals, and listened to steel band music. While they were having a good time socializing, they raised over $1,500 for Emmanuel Cancer Foundation! The hosts said it was easy to do, and their guests were happy to support a local charity. Please consider hosting your own “Party with a Purpose.” It will make a difference to you and to our work. Marjorie was perplexed when her six-year old daughter, Julianna, complained of nausea and dizziness. Julianna’s symptoms, which included a poor appetite, prompted a
visit to the doctor. Several trips to the pediatrician left them baffled, until some tests came back and they learned that Julianna had leukemia. Marjorie told us that was the worst day of her life and that she just cried and cried. Marjorie is a single mom who had been getting by with the help of her parents and friends. The diagnosis was emotionally crushing, and she needed help with so many things: getting her life reorganized to deal with many trips to the oncologist and to treatments, working things out with Julianna’s school, dealing with health insurance problems, and emotionally managing the crisis that had suddenly been thrust upon her. An ECF caseworker quickly stepped in to help Marjorie. In almost (continued on page 12)
