April 21, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 5 Glen Rock Glen Rock’s incumbent Republican council members, Michael O’Hagan and Mary Jane Surrago have filed for their party’s June 8 primary election. There will be two seats available on the council this November. No Democrats have filed for that party’s primary this year, but Independent candidates have until June 8 to declare their candidacy. A two-term councilman, O’Hagan is a graduate of Lehigh University and is active in recreation and youth programs. He has been the motivating force behind a number of safety measures including the speed bumps on Glen Avenue and Doremus Avenue, and the traffic light at the intersection of Maple Avenue and Glen Avenue. Surrago, who is now completing her first term on the council, holds a degree in accounting from Queens Col- Republican incumbents file for primary election lege. She is a certified emergency medical technician and has served as president of the Glen Rock Volunteer Ambulance Corps. She has been active in fostering job opportunities for people with vision loss. Both council members have an extensive background in recreation and safety-related activities, and function smoothly in the existing council with Republican Mayor John van Keuren, Democratic Councilwoman Joan Orseck, and the Republican council majority. Starting with the controversial tax revaluation in 1996, Independent and Democratic challengers led to a borough council which at one point had an Independent mayor and later a 3-3 split between Republicans and Democrats that gradually waned. Council members from both parties are concerned with keeping Glen Rock’s municipal property taxes as reasonable as possible. J.
