Page 8 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • April 14, 2010 The Social Responsibilities Council of The Unitarian Society of Ridgewood will present a series on the history, people, and culture of Afghanistan April 23 through 25. This weekend of education and discussion will include a documentary film, Afghan crafts, and an Afghan dinner. The documentary will be show at 7:30 p.m. on April 23. “Afghan Women: A History of Struggle,” by Kathleen Foster, is a timely documentary that dramatizes the tale of a group of women, and traces how their courage and commitment to change their lives and country passes from one generation to the next. Their stories reflect the recent history of Afghanistan during a quarter-century of cataclysm: from proxy war to civil war, from a Soviet-backed regime to the oppressive rule of the Taliban, to the U.S. military intervention and the current sway of regional warlords, drug czars, and general instability. There will be a facilitated discussion after the film. The Suggested donation is $5. At 6 p.m. on April 24, there will be an Afghan dinner followed by a moderated panel discussion with a focus on Afghan history, culture explored the current challenges facing the people of Afghanistan, the positive contributions of Afghan activists, and opportunities for positive change. The panel will include Shaima Khinjani, a women’s rights activist from Afghanistan and Ramapo College student sponsored by the Initiative to Educate Afghan Women; filmmaker Kathleen Foster, who will discuss history, current events, individual stories, and the grassroots struggles for social change; and Fahima Vorgetts, director of the Afghan Women’s Fund, an organization raising money to build schools for women and girls in Afghanistan. The suggested donation for dinner is $10. Afghan crafts will be sold to benefit the Afghan Women’s Fund. RSVP to Carol Loscalzo at closcalzo2@aol.com or to Tommie Hutto-Blake at (201) 670-1115.
