County bike path plan may be at dead end
Mayor David Pfund and the Ridgewood Village Council declined to make an official comment when Linda Reik and Steven Roth, two opponents of Bergen County’s plan to extend the county’s bike path, told village officials that the freeholders have now dropped the plan. The proposal drew opposition from several village residents. Reik complimented Bergen County Freeholder Elizabeth Calabrese for listening to the Ridgewood residents at the March 24 freeholder board meeting, where village citizens spoke in firm opposition to the bike path extension. Calabrese said the $950,000 originally appropriated for the extension of the path would be returned to the trust fund and not used for the path that neighboring residents from both Ridgewood and Paramus had opposed. Neighbors asserted that the extension of the bike path would have evicted wildlife and would have brought bicyclists from outside the era past their own back yards. Many also pointed out that the project would have involved funds that could be better used in Ridgewood and elsewhere for more viable projects. Mayor Pfund, who had urged the residents to speak before the Bergen County Freeholders, said he could not make an official comment until he had a chance to study the formal response from the freeholder board.
