Candidates’ Night set On Monday, April 19, the Ridgewood League of Women Voters will hold a Candidates’ Night for the upcoming council elections. The forum will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Ridgewood Village Hall Courtroom. There are four candidates for two available seats. Each candidate will receive four prepared questions in advance. The program format will also include time for the public to ask questions. A trained moderator will facilitate this event, which will be televised. Register for Graydon swim team Ridgewood children who are seven years of age and older are welcome to participate in the Graydon Swim Team. Registration for the team will continue through May 22. Swimmers between the ages of nine and 18 who have
passed the Graydon Deep Water Test are invited to join the 2010 Competitive Graydon Swim Team. Practices will focus on stroke refinement, starts and turns, and increasing endurance. The Graydon Pool Swim Team competes in the Lake League of the New Jersey Pool Manager’s Association, which holds eight dual meets on Monday and Thursday evenings. Swimmers who are seven and eight years of age and those who have not passed the Graydon Deep Water Test are invited to join the Pre-comp Swim Team. This team is for swimmers who have taken swim lessons and are ready to move to the next level. Practices (detailed times to follow in the Swim Team Handbook) will focus on stroke development, diving, and endurance. The pre-comp team will compete in intra-squad meets home at Graydon and is limited to the first 50 registrants. The fee is $150 for the first family swimmer, and $100 for each additional family member. After May 22, swimmers will be wait-listed and, if accepted, a $25 late fee will apply. All Swim Team members must hold a valid 2010 Graydon Pool badge. Register online at www.ridgewoodsports.org or in

Healthy Kids Day planned at Y April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month, and the Ridgewood YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day set for April 18 from 2 to 4:30 p.m., will include Parkinson’s Awareness. Research has shown that Parkinson’s symptoms can be reduced and even reversed with consistent aerobic exercise, including spinning. There will be a spinning demonstration, educational materials, and referrals of regional resources to assist family members dealing with this condition. YMCA Healthy Kids Day is the nation’s largest health day for kids age four through 11 and their families. The free event is filled with engaging and creative activities that foster healthy living and is a part of the YMCA’s larger efforts to help more children and families become physically active. All activities are open to the public. Golf instruction offered Ridgewood Parks and Recreation has hired Total Golf Adventures of Bergen County to provide instructional golf sessions for youth and adults. The program will provide the basics such as proper golf set-up, swing fundamentals, and game etiquette. The six-week session will be held on Wednesdays, beginning May 5. Children in kindergarten through grade three will meet from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., those in grades four through eight will meet from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m., and an adult class will meet from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. Classes will take place at the Irene Habernickel Park and the Bellair Putting Green. Rain makeup dates will take place if necessary. The cost for the six-week session is $120. All equipment will be provided by Total Golf Adventures of Bergen County. Special needs information offered Learning Services Home and School Association is sponsoring a presentation on the library’s programs and materials geared for students with special needs on April 21 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Ridgewood Public Library, 125 Maple Avenue. Children’s Librarian Lois Brodie will discuss programs offered for special needs children from birth through high school and modifications the library makes. Brodie will review the parenting collection, materials available for both parents and children, and give an overview on how the materials are arranged. (continued on page 17.)
