April 7, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 9 Ridgewood The 19th Annual Walter Engel Festival of Young Performers will be held April 17 and 18 at the Unitarian Church at 113 Cottage Place, Ridgewood. Concerts will be at 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. each day, and will feature nearly 100 gifted young performers between the ages of eight and 18 who Engel Festival performances feature tomorrow’s stars applied and were selected to perform piano, instrumental, and vocal pieces from the classical repertoire. In addition, three gifted performers will be awarded scholarships based on their performing ability and on how they have shared their talents with the community. A light reception will be held after each program. Although no tickets are required, a good-will offering will be collected to help sponsor future scholarships. This festival is named for composer and conductor Walter Engel, who conducted the New Jersey Philharmonic, The Ridgewood Chamber Orchestra, and the All-State and Regional youth orchestras. He was dedicated to developing and nurturing young talent, and encouraged young musicians to share their music with the community. Over the years, the festival has presented over 60 concerts and awarded dozens of scholarships. Many participants have gone on to prestigious music schools and pursued musical careers. The festival is run by volunteers from the fields of music education and professional performance who are inspired to carry on Engel’s vision. The Ridgewood Police Department responded to a report of a possible break-in at Emanuel Baptist Church at 14 Hope Street at 3:51 a.m. on Match 30, and surrounded the perimeter. When an 18-year-old Clifton man was found exiting the church, he was charged with burglary and criminal mischief, and released on bail pending a court appearance. On March 23, a resident from West Palm Beach, Florida, reported that two of her rings had been taken when she was using a bathroom near Kurth Cottage at Valley Break-in under investigation Hospital. The victim reported that she had left the rings on a sink. When she returned, they were gone. On March 24, a Ridgewood High School student reported that her purse had been stolen from a friend’s gym locker earlier in the month. On March 25, two Ridgewood detectives arrested a 23-year-old village man on a warrant from Paramus on a shoplifting charge. The man was turned over to the Paramus police and remanded to Bergen County Jail.
