Physician recognized for support of organ donation
In a letter to Dr. Jacoby announcing his selection for the award, Joseph Roth, president and chief executive officer of the New Jersey Organ and Tissue Sharing Network, stated, “We are deeply grateful for your advocacy of donation with your professional colleagues, your collaboration in the donation process and the care you provide our donors and their families. Your compassion and expertise have touched the lives of not only the patients and families in your care, but also the lives of the recipients who received their precious gifts.” Dr. Jacoby will be honored by the New Jersey Organ and Tissue Sharing Network at the organization’s Sixth Annual Circle of Life Celebration. The Circle of Life Gala recognizes medical professionals’ and hospitals’ direct impact on saving lives through donation. The gala will be held April 23 at Somerset Park in Somerset.

(continued from page 3) language classes, athletics and extra-curricular activities, new textbooks and other media necessary to meet the demands of updated curricula, technology, supplies and materials, routine preventative maintenance of our physical plant and facilities, and much more.” Dr. Verducci reminded the governor that many administrators and senior teachers started their professional lives working for “absurdly low wages” and that resentment against teachers had surfaced only as their salaries began to approach what he called a living wage. He asked the taxes be increased on the top one percent of New Jersey residents and on sheltered programs, but said he opposed drastic tax increases for ordinary residents. He also asked that state-mandated basic skills tests be reduced for Glen Rock and other districts that have a demonstrated competence in providing a solid basic education. “Students who can score an 85 percent passing rate year after year do not need to have instructional time wasted with over-testing,” he said. “The solution is simple: return to the former system of testing in grades four, eight, and 11.” He called this change an educationally valid, statistically reliable measure of students’ progress. Verducci urged cuts in unfounded mandates including bilingual education, bio-hazard programs, school security over-management, “overboard” anti-bullying and antiviolence and vandalism programs and reporting requirements, and standardized testing. He said the governor should reduce the rate of health care increases in the State Health Benefits program, and said that support of the Bergen Academies and proposed charter schools would further impact the burden on local taxpayers even if the taxpayers’ own children were not served by those schools. He also said that citing individual abuses in other districts should not be used to justify harsh financial conditions on all districts, particularly not those which, like Glen Rock, have a solid reputation for academic achievement and fiscal probity. “We need your leadership, Governor Christie, and we need it now,” Verducci concluded. “Please help us to save our district. For quality public schools such as ours – New Jersey’s “Lighthouse” districts – time is running out.”
Steven Jacoby M.D.
