Boil water order did not signify health threat
by John Koster The “boil water order” sent to most Ridgewood Water Company customers the weekend of March 26 through 28 was based on a Department of Environmental Protection regulation, and not on any threat to the health of consumers, water company officials recently reported. Ridgewood Water Company Director Frank Moritz said the notification to customers to boil their water before using it for drinking or cooking was ordered by the DEP, and that there was, as far as he was concerned, never a threat to health during the three-day period. The order to boil tap water was conveyed to all of Ridgewood, all of Glen Rock, 100 houses in Wyckoff, and about 25 houses in Midland Park. Moritz said no one reported any substantive harm to health, whether they had boiled the water or not. “We were doing a flush test at Cottage Place on Friday afternoon and the crew closed a valve,” Moritz said last week. “They didn’t know that a valve farther down had also been closed, maybe for years. When they opened the valve, nothing came out.” The loss of water pressure before the reopening of the valves also opened the potential for outside contamination, and, acting according to regulations, the Ridgewood Water Company notified the DEP, which in turn told Ridgewood to issue a boil water mandate for the area potentially involved. On Sunday afternoon, the DEP concluded tests that showed Ridgewood Water Company tap water to be free of any bacterial contamination and the boil water mandate was lifted by automatic telephone calls to all involved homes.
