Franklin Lakes September 15, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 3 Mayor names Seltenrich acting police chief by Frank J. McMahon Mayor Maura DeNicola has appointed Captain Joseph R. Seltenrich acting police chief in the Borough of Franklin Lakes. DeNicola took the action following a closed session meeting of the borough council last week when she announced that the term of the appointment will be until the borough has a part-time public safety director or a new police chief. Seltenrich temporarily replaces the former police chief, Irving Conklin. Conklin, who retired July 30, has a contract with the borough to return next February in a part time position as public safety director. His contract satisfies the borough ordinance that requires the municipality to have either a police chief or a public safety director. The details of Seltenrich’s contract were not released, but he said he welcomed the opportunity to serve the borough in this capacity. “I certainly look forward to the challenge,” Seltenrich said after being informed about his appointment. “I appreciate the opportunity the mayor and council have given me and I’m thankful for the confidence they have shown in me to do the job.” Seltenrich became a patrolman in the borough’s police department in 1976 and completed his basic training at the Police and Fire Academy in Mahwah (now the Law & Public Safety Institute). He became a patrol sergeant in 1980 and ran a patrol squad until 1989, when he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. He assumed additional administrative responsibilities while still managing a patrol squad. In 2000, when Conklin became the department’s chief, Seltenrich became the executive officer to the police chief. In 2007, he was promoted to the rank of captain. A resident of Midland Park, where his wife has been a life-long resident, Seltenrich has been married for 34 years and has three sons. He holds an associate’s degree in police science from Bergen County Community College and has taken numerous administrative courses. In 1996, Seltenrich attended the Federal Bureau of Investigation Academy and graduated from that academy in its 185th session. During the 10 years Seltenrich has been an administrative officer in the borough’s police department, he said he has seen all aspects of the department from the rank of patrolman all the way up to police chief.
