Dave Lancaster was recently selected to head the Midland Park Board of Recreation. He succeeds the late Robert Greer, who had resigned from the board prior to his death in July. The board has two new members as well, Doug Hamilton and Robert Sansone. Lancaster, known to everyone as “Font”, has been a part of the borough’s recreation programs since June, 1974, when he started working as a barn attendant. He started taking care of the Dairy Street fields “because it was summer and

slow inside,” he said, and the rest is history. Midland Park’s ball fields are the pride of local athletes and the envy of competing teams. He retired from the barn monitoring position in April, 2006 and was appointed a regular member of the recreation board in January. Lancaster said the board’s priority will be to develop a code of conduct that will apply to all sports. “We hope to have it in place for the next sports - junior basketball and wrestling,” he said.
Midland Park Matters
The code of conduct, which became controversial last spring when coaches and parents complained it was not being fairly enforced, if at all, now reads, in part: “It is therefore essential for parents, coaches and officials to encourage youth athletes to embrace the values of good sportsmanship. Moreover, adults involved in youth sports events should be models of good sportsmanship and should lead by example by demonstrating fairness, respect and self control.
